Ozzie Smith!
-
Of all the cards ever released in this game, wouldn’t you think a 28 yr old version of The Wizard of Oz would have 99 fielding?! Or even 90??! Unbelievable. Dude is in the HoF strictly because he was the greatest defensive shortstop of all time.
-
Yes, it is insane how Shortstops in the game have a higher fielding than Ozzie. There are currently 15 SS in the game including 11 live series cards.
But that is the silly game they have to play to keep guys at certain overall ratings. In order to give Ozzie reasonable hitting stats they had to dial back back his defense or he would actually be a much higher overall.
For most players SDS just tanks the vision attribute but they gave Ozzie 103 vision so they had to reduce something else.

Garry Templeton did a guest spot and came up with the ratings on this card.

LOL, the beginning of the end for Templeton and the catalyst for the Ozzie Smith era.

Not going to lie I’d love to get Garry T in the game though

@Dolenz_PSN wasn’t aware of this; what happened if you care to recall?
-
He did have 21 errors that year. 87 fielding sounds about right.

Fans booed Templeton after he failed to run out a missed third strike.
As he came into the dugout he responded with a Rude gesture and was warned by the umpire.
An inning or two later he was on the on deck circle when the inning ended and the fans were still giving him a hard time and he made another gesture to the fans that got him tossed by the umpire and resulted in the picture of a visibly upset Herzog physically pulling Templeton off the field.
It happened in late August. In the offseason he was traded to SD for Smith.

@Dolenz_PSN great thank you! Was it a Jack McDowell at Yankee Stadium gesture? (Speaking of which, the early-mid 90s White Sox need more representation).

I honestly don't know, but I am guessing it wasn't the recent Tommy Pham gesture.

@Area_Man__PSN I had him ole a routine grounder a la Roger Dorn in a ranked season match and it turned into a double. They really did Ozzie dirty with this card. Despicable to see him being a poor fielder. That's literally the incentive to have him in the lineup!
