Baseball is pay to win

Some people complain that mlb the show is pay to win ( I don't think it is)
But I was looking up mlb team payrolls and all the top 5 payrolls are in the playoffs as of this post . A few outliers like the orioles towards the bottom.
Sports are pay to win . I just thought it was funny . That's all carry on . -
If the Orioles want to continue to have success they will have to pay those players.

Welcome to "Arguments from 1997".

The term "pay to win" became popular during the Yankees late 90s-early 2000s run like signing free agents was a new concept or something. I remember vividly getting into an argument with a Red Sox fan during the 04 season who was blah blah A Rod this and yada yada Giambi that. He would ramble on about "homegrown talent" and how the Yankees always signed the big name free agents to "buy championships". I pointed out that of all the key players on the 04 Red Sox only 2 of them were "homegrown", that being Youkilis and Trot Nixon. I even conceded and gave him Varitek even though he wasnt drafted by Boston.
The fact is, all sports are about winning. Yeah im sure a GM would love to say that they drafted, signed and developed an entire team of champions but thats not reality. Sometimes you gotta move the pieces of the puzzle to make them fit.

Real baseball, yes. This game, hell no. I’m sitting on 5+ million no money spent and every card except a few in season 1 I refuse to overpay for at this point.

Both MLB Baseball and the game are the same. Neither are pay to win but both could be considered "Pay to improve your chances".
Lets look at last years starting payrolls (According to USA Today at the beginning of the 2023 season)
- Mets - Did not Make the Playoffs
- Yankees - Did not make the Playoffs
- San Diego - Did not make the Playoffs
- Philadelphia - Knocked out by Arizona
- Dodgers - Knocked out by Arizona
- Angels - Did not make Playoffs
- Toronto - Knocked out in the wild card round
- Atlanta - Knocked out by Philadelphia
- Texas - Won it all
- Houston - Knocked out by Texas
The team with the 9th highest payroll won it all
The team with the 21st highest payroll (Arizona) knocked out #20, #5 and #4Of the top 3 payrolls the highest any of them ranked in their division was 3rd and that was the Padres. The Mets and Yankees were 4th in their divisions and the Mets had a losing record.

It's professional baseball. The object is to be paid to win games. MLB has implemented the luxury tax, the rule 5 draft, and compensation drafts, as well as using a draft lottery now to detour tanking.
The thing is drafting amateur players for professional baseball is about the most unpredictable speculation that there is in professional athletics, and even drafting professional players from the international leagues, even the really high quality Nippon League in Japan, is speculative.
So, it is hard to draft enough talent, develop it, and get it to the MLB team in time to compete for titles. The Rule 5 draft was intended to help, but many said it would hurt, and I agree. My view is there should be a limit to how many players one team can have drafted in any Rule 5 draft. Also, I think any team that failed to make the playoffs should have their entire rosters immune from the Rule 5 draft.
The players are mostly to blame for this. They are the group who pressed for a reduction in the renewable contract lengths, the implementation of the Rule 5 draft, and were adamantly opposed to any salary cap. All of these moves may have increased player salaries, but all of them certainly were a detriment to balance of competition.
The situation is highlighted by what is expected to become the worst regular season finish since 1900, with only the 18th century's Cleveland Spiders finishing with a record worse than the 2024 Chicago White Sox likely will finish with.
