So I wonder what the odds are on Ohtani actually getting to 60-60? Probably very long, but I think he has a puncher's chance. -

Bond's career WAR from 86-98 was 99.9. That alone would have put him 27th on the all-time WAR list at the time (now 32nd) behind such people as Young, Collins, Alexander, Grove, and Spahn who, while all great in their own rights, owe their high WAR scores due to longevity.
Labeling him as a Top 5 all-timer prior to 98 would certainly qualify as a Hot Take, but you could definitely make the case.
Well he would have needed to have a decent end career, which again is far from certain.
But his career through age 33 compares well with mays. mays was the better fielder (even if they had the same amount of gold gloves) but Bonds was probably the better hitter. 3 mvps in 4 years (with a second place finish the other year) speaks volumes about how good he was for the era. Even in that 1998 year bonds was still leading the league with 30 intentional walks.

It is widely accepted Bonds didnt start taking steroids until after the 1998 season
Something being "widely accepted" doesnt make it fact. It was once "widely accepted" among kids that Santa Claus was real and now as adults, we know how that turned out.
