Inventory API Call

I have been playing around with making a tool to track the value of all the cards that I have and have been able to figure out how to use both the market and items API to download data within an R script. However, I haven't had any success using the inventory API to download my inventory. I see on the documentation page it says you need to be logged in for this call to work, so is there anyway to do this from outside of a web browser? Any advice or direction on how one might do this, especially from inside of an R script, would be greatly appreciated.
