RIP Whitey Herzog
-
I just saw that Whitey Herzog passed away a few days ago at the age of 1982. He will always be my favorite Cardinals Manager since he was the manager during my late teens and early 20s and led the Cardinals to 3 World Series appearances and one World Series win.
He brought some fun into the game with his Whiteyball style which emphasized speed, pitching and defense over power.
I remember him doing things many other managers were not doing. In long extra inning games he would move a pitcher to the outfield so that he could bring in a better pitching matchup and then bring the pitcher in from the outfield to continue pitching a few batter later.
He is the manager who allowed Jose Oquendo to be the first player since 1918 to play all 9 positions in a season, including pitcher and catcher.
If you can find it there is an MLB documentary called Birds of A Different game which is about the Cardinals in the 80s. Well worth a watch if you can find it.

Great team to watch, and watch mlb teams start going back to this. My guardians headed that way
Moving runners over hitting oppo and stealing bases with good pitching and defense is still the way to go
