Why I play and enjoy MLBTS.

I posted this as my response to another thread and think it's a valid thought others might appreciate.
After years of Madden, I'm happy I get to still use the cards after completing the set. Any game is the same thing with new clothes. Heck, COD hasn't been much different in 25 years. Just new clothes. I love the game of baseball. This game brings it closer to me. Building my team with my favorite players? Awesome. It also adds history. Before the NBL program, which is great, we got players like Honus Wagner. Heard the name, Knew the card value, but didn't know a thing about him. After enjoying his play, I looked him up online. Now I know more about him and really appreciate his role in baseball history. There is so much more than Babe Ruth and I love discovering it. DD makes that possible.

Agreed. Prior to this game I knew the name Jimmie Foxx but never had much interest in learning about him. Since he has been in the game he has been one of my favorite cards to use each year. So true about prospects. I actually look forward to watching them being called up. Saw the game last year when Reid Detmers threw a no hitter. Thinking to myself, "that's why he has the A potential." I might be a dork, but I enjoy it.

He told me stories of Williams and Yaz, and ditching school for a day game. We'd watch Boggs and Mattingly on TV and saw Gwynn play live in SD. This was all started by guys like Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson. Such a wonderful History.

I can’t even begin to share with you just how beautiful this post was to me. My GOD man but if this isnt what it’s all about! Bless you man, I thank you for sharing this on here…I mean this from the innermost depths of my soul. Today is my dad’s birthday and he was on my mind upon waking. I lost him 25 years ago but the fond memories that were conjured by the wizardry of your post has made them oh so present again this morning. Again, i bless you and thank you.

That’s awesome man. My Grandpa was from Brooklyn. He was heart broken when they moved to LA, so he moved to his second favorite NL town of St Louis (also happened get a job there). He met my grandma who was from Chicago and they had my mom.
I was taught at an early age all about the Bums Jackie, Duke, Pee Wee, Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella.
Meanwhile my mom told stories of Bob Gibson and taught me that we root for the Cardinals or we eat elsewhere. At 2 that is daunting.
Also my dad was from San Fran and would try to usurp this order with stories of the Mays and McCovey, all the while I’m growing up watching Gwynn in San Diego (birth place of one Ted Williams). To say I was a confused young fan was an understatement.
Eventually my mom and Grandpa who’d converted to the Red Birds won out. After taking a big break from baseball after the strike, I rediscovered my love for it in 2001 when a young unknown prospect by the name of Albert started waving his magic wand in St Louis.

If it wasn't for Pete Rose, I might have never played organized baseball. I saw him on a black and white TV in 1963 on the Game of the Week. I saw him draw a walk and sprint to first base. I was 8 years old and said I want to be just like him. I had my mom find out how to sign me up for Little League the next year and then proceeded to play for the next 29 years. We won the state Championship my senior year in High School and I was given a 4 year ride to play D1 college. I got as far as playing in a scout league for the Twins but never Pro ball. I did get an education that I owe all to the Great Game of Baseball. The rest is history.

My best friend is a Vols die hard as he went to school there but is from Seattle- talk about heartbreak. Just give Marahawn the ball Pete!!!! Plus the M’s being the only team never to make the World Series. That’s a tough one to swallow. I still think if Robbie “middle Middle” Ray doesn’t give up that game winner to Yordan, the M’s have a real shot to get there last year.

Awesome. Brother, I just knew that you had some rich lore to spread…I can only hope that I get to pick your brain when you come up! Pete Rose is another one of my heros too…loved how he would wad himself up like a paper wad in the batters box so his strike zone was about the size of a pea…I thought the other day that I wonder if there’s anyone out there who hears about someone doing a ‘petey’ into third base and doesn’t realize it was Rose that it’s named after….not that there’s ever been another player who has ever come close to mimicking his technique perfectly…and by that I mean I’ve never seen anyone else lay out with such full body, arm and leg extension such that the players body look like the letter ‘u’ folded inside out as it hurdles through the air with belt buckle being the lowest point of the body while still yet being 5 feet from the ground haha now that man played with absolute reckless abandon! We love you Petey!

Thank you brother. I just read them all and appreciated the game again. New memories are here for the future. Watching Arenado (my fellow ETHS alum, too old to meet him though) and Goldie duke it out for MVP. Watching Trout and Ohtani hit Home Runs in the same game. I love the history made now. Is Elly the second coming of Rickey? Can Judge continue with his Ruthian efforts. This game...

I’m about halfway through joe Kelly’s new book. It’s definitely not ball four but it gives a good insiders look at the game today from a pretty outspoken guy.

You want a quick glimpse into Joe Kelly - find the pitching ninja podcast episode with him. Think it was from last year some time. He’s a pretty friggin squared away dude…now that I think about it there’s a great one with Billy Wagner also. You should check this out…there are very few like the Ninja - that man could talk pitch grips for hours without losing a shred of enthusiasm and inquisitiveness.

The exchange between Jim Bouton and Joe Morgan in that book about the difference between a curveball and a mofo curveball in the clubhouse is one of the funniest baseball stories I have ever read about.
