How are the top payrolls doing?
-
Every year I see fans of my favorite team saying that the ownership needs to spend more to keep up with the big spenders in MLB. Keeping that in mind and looking at the standings today here are your top 5 payrolls and where they stand
- Mets - 353 million - 50-55 - 18 games out
- Yankees - 276 million - 55-50 - 9 games out
- San Diego - 248 million - 52-54 - 8 games out
- Philadelphia - 243 million - 56-49 - 12 games out
- Dodgers - 222 million - 59-45 - In 1st place
On the flipside some of the lowest payroll teams
- Baltimore - 60 million - 64-41 - In first place
- Tampa Bay - 73 million - 64-44 - 2nd place 1.5 games back
- Cincinnati - 83 million - 58-49 - In first place
Just proof that while spending may increase your overall odds but in the end it can amount to very little.

Thank you, Mr. Beane.
It's a fun statistic (as of today), but let's not pretend that on the average, higher payrolls = better players. I've always been a "no cap" guy, but even I admit that the more you spend, the higher your odds are of winning.

Not long ago the Dodgers had the top payroll. The four teams above them now got there by throwing money at big name players. A lot of new egos on a team is not a good recipe.
For the bottom three only Tampa has a proven track record. Baltimore and Cincinnati kind of remind me of the Kanas City Royals from a decade ago. Teams that were bottom feeders for years on end until they had a lot of homegrown talent. They better hope they cash it in because their windows will be short-lived and their star players will be off to NY or California via trade or free agency.
