Here's an idea for my halos. Trade Ohtani if he will not resign. Add Rendon to the package which will free up $65 million. Go heavy for, the hometown boy, Matt Chapman and an real second baseman in free agency. Put Drury at first, or second if necessary. Outfield doesn't need any changes. Moniak and Adell (finally) can replace Renfroe. Trade Renfroe for a 2B prospect. I think the rays have a spare.
Almost any team over 500 could use Ohtani and a team like the Twins, Brewers, and Marlins might go for it.
Outstanding post. Kudos to you for being willing to look at many options. When you said 2B in the free agent market the first name that came to mind was the Wong kid up in Seattle…did they ever resign him? Or does he have another year to go
Baez comes to mind
Baez has 5 years left with the Tigers and he has a no trade clause, he is going nowhere. Kolton Wong is available but he is batting well below the mendoza mark at 161. With 1 home run and 15 RBI's don't see how that helps the Angels at all.
Now i know he's hurt but a guy like Gavin Lux may start to get the Angels attention. Thats the kind of player a Ohtani trade might require.
You also have to rule out the teams that Ohtani will never sign with, hate to say it but to takes out Detroit, Pittsburgh, Miami or any team not making the playoffs, also think West coast. I still say the Giants make a play for him. You know they would love to stick it to the Dodgers and they have prospects and space.

Baez has an opt out this year per MLB.
2B FAs-Jon Berti (club option), Adam Frazier, Jorge Polanco (club option), Whit Merrifield (mutual option), Jonathan Schoop, Kolten Wong
These would be short term

Ok that may be true but the fact reamins that Ohtani will not be traded to a non playoff team. Also I don't think Baez opts out of his contract.

I don't see Ohtani going to the Dodgers yet because of the animosity between the two teams. I do like Gavin Lux though and I think he still has 3 years of team control. Gavin Lux and Zach Neto as the Angels middle infield would be scary good.

The Pirates just took out a reverse mortgage on PNC Park, so I'm pretty confident Ohtani will be wearing the Black and Gold come August.
There was an article on that back in April when they were still on the hot streak lol

Those teams won’t take Rendon. The team that’ll take Rendon is the team Arte won’t trade with.

Man the trade rumors around Shohei just continue to fester. The guy on Baseball Tonight podcast seems to believe it’s gonna happen. Clocks ticking haha I can’t wait to see what happens around the league, Ohtani or no. My Mets have some chips they sure could ante up to make for an interesting pot!
ps hey, a poker metaphor hat trick!

Hoping the Reds do something......but not expecting them to.

Less than a week to go…can’t wait to see! I bet my hapless Mets are going to offload one of their aces if not two. The Orioles are a couple of trades away from being a WS caliber team so I’d sure enjoy seeing whom else they acquire. I LOVED the addition of Shintaro! Also loved to see Kike go back home to the Dodgers where he belongs…even though I can never pull for the Dodgers fully as a Met fan (still stewing over the 1988 nlcs), I DO love me a good, intelligent, and strategic baseball move. Anyone else?

No, I like boneheaded moves like trading Pedro Martinez for Delino DeShields. It would be cool if Mike Scioscia were added to the game so we could replay his homer in 88 though.
-
Phillies need a corner outfielder with a bat and possibly a 1B as well. Possibly will be looking for a 5th starter too

Those rumors get clicks online, whether they have any basis in reality or not.
I keep seeing Arenado's name pop up in articles about potential trades in spite of the the fact that the Cardinals pretty much stated that they are not even considering it.

Yes I certainly couldn’t blame you for watching that replay lol. Especially since there are only 2 others from that season to choose from!
ps I love the boneheaded deals also

They’d never trade Ohtani not in a million years because they still think they have some kind of chance re-signing him. I don’t think they do but that’s only me. As far as Arenado goes…that would be a shocker but could be sweet to see him play for a chance at the WS

Syndergaard just got dealt to AL and I wish Thor a new beginning in his new league. Once ye were mighty

Angels are acquiring Lucus Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez + Ohtani has been pulled off trade waivers. Looks like the Angels are making a playoff push

I’m glad to see the Angels finally throw down the gauntlet. With Shohei officially off the table now we can hope to see the rest of baseballs contenders to wake up and make some moves.
I saw where Lance Lynn is willing to waive his no trade clause in order to play for the Dodgers. That could be interesting

According to a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, several teams who have spoken to the Padres in recent days believe that pending free agents Blake Snell and Josh Hader will be traded.
From mlb.com
Wouldn’t that shake things up
