…now there was an intelligent, skillful ball player! Was just on my way back from KnoxVegas this morning and was listening to the old radio broadcast of the 1965 WS Game 7 (Dodgers v. Twins) playing over the speakers when I heard Oliva come up to bat in the 9th. I literally broke out in a sweat when I heard Killebrew was to follow haha. I love baseball!
Wanted to ask…have they ever made a Tony Oliva card? He was such a true hitter and a real student of the art ala Carew, Rose, Gwynn etc. Just curious if he had been on TheShow before. I can easily visualize his Finest card (I’m hoping it’s not because I had it in my lineup in TS22!), and think I’d like to have him batting 2nd if not lead off.
Back on the subject of the 65 WS…I didn’t know this before today, but Koufax only had 1 pitch working for him on this incredible night - his fastball. He said he was just worn slap out and felt like he was 101 years old right after the game was over. Think about what this man did during his time in the league…he hung up his spikes at 30 years old! …here’s more…Oliva was elected to the HOF in 2022! How did I miss this? I must’ve been too busy whining about something else…matter of fact I’m sure of it.
I tried a few searches and can’t find anything definitive that tells me if he’s had a card here or not but maybe one is soon in the works…
