Accidentally collected Kiner into Set 1
-
Pulled Ralph Kiner's Prime series card late last night and forgot all about it when I got on this morning. Got some new POTM cards and auto-collected my binder without thinking, which collected Kiner as well. I submitted a ticket to SDS as soon as I realized what I'd done. Is there any chance I can get that card back sellable or am I SOL?

You're out of luck, like 2 dogs stuck, as the saying goes
I can give you my autographed Ralph Kiner baseball as compensation..... -
They asked you if you were sure.
You clicked yes. -

JK- do you really have a signed Kiner baseball?
PSA- none of what I wrote is true and no animals were hurt in the typing of this post.

Yes. Around 2000. I was working the press entrance, and sometimes the players entrance at Shea Stadium for Central Parking System back then. I met many, many players and celebs. Kiner was still on Mets broadcasts at the time.
I met Mark McGuire, Dusty, Chris Berman, Piazza, Vlad Sr., Leiter, Mike Hampton, Tom Glavine as a Brave, Fonzie, Gary Thorne, so many. It was surreal.
Kiner was a BELOVED Mets broadcaster, and Tim McCarver brought out the best in him on Mets broadcasts. I cried like a baby when he passed. McCarver as well. -
The good news, Kiner rakes. Don’t listen to what anyone says. He rakes and has one of the most interesting stories of any WW2/baseball Vet. He was a patrol pilot in the Pacific Theatre and accumulated 1,300+ hours hunting enemy submarines. Unlike many of his contemporaries (Ted Williams, Hank Greenberg etc), he had never seen a major league pitch. His rookie year came the year after the war ended- 1946. All he did was lead in the NL in Home Runs his first 7 years in the league hitting 304 HRs in that time.
I wish this guy got more love. He’d have easily been an inner circle HOFer if he hadn’t lost the first 5 years of his professional career- helping to save the world.

Yeah it would have been amazing to meet these guys. My Grandpa was a communications specialist (he wasn’t the pilot but spent the war in the air). He told all kinds of stories about Kiner. He ranks up there with Gwynn, Gibson and Pujols as my favorite players of all time despite being born 3 decades after his career ended.

I can't stand Chris Berman or the late Tim McCarver. Even as a kid I knew they were horrible broadcasters. Berman is a gimmick and Tim McCarver would use as much air time as possible to state something so obvious and not at all insightful.

Wow. What a great person you are.
At least have some respect for McCarver, as he has passed on. Wow. Cold-hearted people just don't quit being that way, I guess. -

I liked McCarver in the Kiner/Zabriskie days on WOR. He gave you catcher's insight on pitch selection and told self-deprecating stories about his playing days. His ego did seem to take off once he went national, though. Not the first person that happened to, wasn't the last.
I'll always remember his stunned silence to Ralph Kiner's "It's Father's Day here at Shea Stadium, so for all of you fathers out there, Happy Birthday!"
I couldn't have stayed in the booth.

McCarver was so bad he received the Ford C Frick award and was inducted into the HOF as an announcer.
Pretty sure your insight was the minority.

Of course I have. McCarver did Mets games for years, and I think he worked for the 3 major networks, so I guess he was pretty good, lol.

Yes! Me too! Tim's insight was incredible to us at the time on Channel 9. And 'Kiners Corner' was big back then.

I mean, as he got older and worked with Joe Buck he wasn’t my favorite. But he always called himself out on a mistake, had great insight into the game and just a fantastic voice for the booth. I may be bias as I love the Cardinals but he is the one of the voices of my youth so I’ll always appreciate his contributions to the game. I guess we all have different opinions. But I wouldn’t say he was known as a horrible broadcaster.
