So if I understand correctly after set 1 is over, we will never be able to use the set 1 cards again to play online only core card and the current set cards ?

In addition to the wild card, we will be able to use them during set 2.
we won't be able to use them during set 3, but no one knows yet what will be useable during set 4 or after.
