I know this topic gets brought up over and over again...but I have to admit I'm a little concerned about the legends for 2023. I feel like last year they teased us with a slew of new legends (which was pretty cool)....and it seems like this year more than half of them are gone.

Has SDS came out and given a legit, real explanation as to why they are losing players rights and why they can't acquire certain players? Is it possible that some of these legends we all have been dying for simply have no idea that they aren't in the game? Is SDS doing their best to get as many in the game as possible?

Who are we kidding, were all going to buy the game regardless....but I'd have to say my biggest disappointment in this game this year is the recycling of legend cards and especially the introduction of retro finest.

SDS does not have an unlimited budget, so they have to pick and choose who gets added and who gets dropped. That budget has increased (especially with the switch/Xbox money), but it’s still not infinity.

Certain players are more than likely to be one and done (looking at YOU, Justin Morneau), but I imagine a lot depends on usage. If a legend isn’t ever getting any usage by the community, there’s a good chance he’ll be shown the virtual door to make way for someone new.

Someone produced a list at the beginning of the year of all new or returning legends and all legends that were no longer in the game this year and in my opinion the new far outweighed the old. To my knowledge the biggest names we lost were guys like George Foster and Fred McGriff. We gained Randy Johnson, Roy Halladay, Mussina etc.

To be honest, I haven't really noticed any of the absent players from last year other than the two who were removed mid year last year Puckett and Alomar.

I'm actually not sure that more than a couple of this years new ones are one and done. The HRDX guys are the most likely 1 and done because I'm honestly not sure if thats just a one time deal for the real life event. I was Certain Brandon Webb and Huston Street were going to be one and done and they weren't. There were only 4 last year(Puckett, Bell, Tanana, Hampton)

He wasn’t in last year either. He was removed after 20 along with Cobb and Hornsby

Oh man, if Hornsby or Teddy Ballgame were in the game and then left I'd be bereft. But alas I started in 21 and never knew such cards. Cobb would be a ton of fun too but Hornsby being a Cardinals great and Teddy being a local San Diego boy would be really cool.

But from 21 to 22 I can't think of any HOFers who left (I guess Puckett and Alomar but they were erased mid year last year).

There is also an element that some player will say no, no matter what amount is thrown at them.

Bonds would be the prime example of this he does not license his likeness to anything.

There is also a likely hood that other ask for way to much and SDS doesn't see the value in giving that kind of money for that player when it could be use on another that would be a bigger draw

I think SDS does a pretty good job on getting legends for the most part, could they get more sure but with how many people brag about being NMS they can only do so much

At this point I'll just be happy to get top level Arenado and Goldschmidt cards. But I do admit that MV2 just does not have the same ring.

I’m surprised they don’t have a blanket agreement with the HoF for all of those players.

Right???? Especially with the level of Cards (pun intended) that Jimmy and Pujols just got. At least we can throw a cool Lou Brock in the mix tomorrow. But I miss that MV3!!!!!

Outside the top 1000 MLB Career WAR
Barely hanging on Top 25 Career WAR for Twins (till Buxton gets there)
Received 1.3% in his only appearance on HOF Ballot
Lefty 1B are a dime a dozen in the annals of MLB History

Don't get me wrong, he had a career most would envy. And I'm eternally grateful he stole an MVP from Jeter. But is he selling any units outside the immediate Morneau household (which is what SDS cares most about)? Probably not.

They do, and the players alumni association.
The loading screen before the game starts says as much.
but as for who gets offered or how many and what it costs??

I don't think players being inducted into the HOF gives the HOF any rights as far as licensing their likenesses the way the MLBPA does for current players.

And let's be clear that is the hurdle here. Look at a game like Out Of The Park baseball and their Perfect Team mode. They have many more legends in their games. How can they pull that off? Only their live series cards have actual pictures of the players (thanks to the MLBPA agreement) for all legend and flashback cards they use generic cards with no pictures of the players.

No the HoF or the alumni association for that matter doesnt automatically get representation rights.
there is a blanket representation available from both that players belonging to either can sign up for, it works similar to the way the mlbpa one does, except that the pa one is automatic and these arent.
What they set the rates at and who they make available and how many is anyones guess.

I remember back before DD was as big as it is and probably actually before it became a thing. I think this was around 2010 the show had the golden era team and the silver era team. You could only play with the charactersin exhibitions or online exhibitions.

    Golden era had legends like
    Cy Young
    Ted Williams
    Babe Ruth
    Tris Speaker
    Joe DiMaggio
    Satchel Paige
    Bob Feller
    Grover Cleveland Alexander
    Gil Hodges

    Silver Era had:
    Nolan Ryan
    Tom Seaver
    Willie Stargel
