Gameplay comparison 21-22
-
Ok guys, I’m looking for comparison of gameplay between 21 and 22. I never bought 22, and have been pretty happy with that decision, but there are a bunch of good Mariners cards in the new game, and bound to be more on the way with the postseason approaching.
Realistically, how much worse is the gameplay this year compared to 21?
-
The pci anchor added on 2022 is outstanding.
Hitting seems just off
Fielding in 22 is too easy for low rated guys.
But… I love the game.
It always could be better. -
It’s not very different. The main things you’ll notice are the pci anchor, the diving plays, and the saved rosters in events

Fielding is absolutely atrocious in 22 there is zero balance and everyone plays the same it was way better during the beta

Welcome back, halfbutt!
I think the game plays slightly better overall this year. The CPU defense is still god tier across the board, but that is nothing new. I think you and I used to joke about common defense outfielders laying out for Superman catches. Same deal in 22. The pci anchor is kind of useful. I think pitching has been slightly less frustrating this year. Essentially it’s the same game as 21 with minor tweaks.
Overall it’s not an enormous upgrade, but I do prefer 22 over 21. One big improvement — SDS has done a much better job of making sure the market doesn’t run amok. BR and RS rewards are very affordable due to the new BR and WS reward structures. And on most events, they throw in Events rewind packs, so there aren’t any of those annoying, unusable, and unobtainable events cards going for 700,000 stubs. They also have a new Headliner choice pack that goes for 25K and greatly increases the odds of pulling the HL. So almost all headliners are very reasonably priced. That is especially good for someone picking up the game in September.
If you’re on the fence about picking up the game, I say go for it! Hit me up if you’re ever up for an easy W.

People are also leaving out how much worse pitching is as well. Not because there’s any game breaking mechanics, more so they nerfed the user input for pitching. Hitting isn’t good at all as you’ll see many random results, like squaring it up for a good/good pop out and still can hit no pci homeruns. Every fielder makes spectacular plays, CPU difficulty is a bit higher this year. Arm strength is somehow enhanced when turning double plays, but that’s been an issue since 18

I’ve been reading about this. So would I want to switch back to analog from pinpoint?

No, dotting is more difficult. It's more realistic. And non-fastball pitches are harder to throw high. So no high inside sinkers that look like too high 4seamers or CBs that hit the top of the zone on purpose. I like it. To me, it takes some of the utterly unrealistic things we've been taking advantage of and cheesers use incessantly. Takes some getting used to, and your aim will change a little, but still more accurate than the others.

Pitching being worse is a disincentive for sure. I remember the whole introduction of PPP in 21 was because of all the gravity balls in previous versions, so, I guess they’re back.
$50 for standard edition on Sept 18. Hmmm.

That seems pricey for this late in the season. 2023 is over 6 months out, tough choice

Well I pulled the trigger at $55.99 total purchase price. Hopefully I can get my theme team without TOO much ridiculous grinding.
See you all on the diamond!

Nobody mentioned but monthly programs are a little bit of a grind now.
-
Well, they always were a bit of a grind. I suppose I’ll have to acquire a bunch of Topps now cards to complete these.
Fortunately, I’m really only interested in the programs that have JP Crawford, Matt Brash, and George Kirby. Mariners theme team will still take some grinding I guess.
-
I’ll say this much. Just from playing the intro game as things are installing, I can tell that 1) PCI is extremely sensitive and harder to position 2) CPU hitting and fielding and pitching is ridiculous 3) pitching is way harder to locate with pinpoint.
Might take a while to get my team going.

All that you need for the MA programs can be earned in the program, buying the MA players only helps you complete stage 2 faster but make sure you dont do the all collect, only the 5 is needed for the lightning.
Also mini seasons is the best new thing in the game. Have fun. -
Much worse in my opinion.Plus play options are not as good, trading extra innings mode for that rigged mini mouse season is a joke. Games vrs anything CPU for critical rewards are 80 % scriptlike feeling. Trend towards forcing online play continues and overall the game suffers. 21 is better than 22 . The Show is on the Madden path. Hate it too , big fan of the Series, The Show I mean. Do not expect change in this trend . Hang on to your 20 and 21 copies.

Yeah, I have to agree. Now that I gave in and bought 22, I’m reminded how heavily manipulated all the vs cpu stuff is (moments specifically). This has always been one of my biggest beefs with the game, the way difficulty is inconsistent from mode to mode. They should really just eliminate the different difficulties altogether, because aside from pci size, they seem largely irrelevant.
-
I don’t think it is even close. Gameplay with ‘21 had issues, but ‘22 is significantly worse. Diving plays all over the place including full Superman dives in the outfield, foul balls more often than ‘21, pitching is super inconsistent and with hitting it is just a roll of the dice. I have played a little ‘21 lately and it was really a breath of fresh air. I sometimes wonder if people just compare out of memory or if they have recently played ‘21 to see the difference. That doesn’t even mention the non-gameplay pains of ‘22.
-
I have to agree, although my experience with 22 is only a couple days old. I’m already kind of regretting the decision because there is NO way I’m grinding the amount of moments I’ll need to unlock George Kirby, JP Crawford, etc. sigh.
