Louie Varland -Twins SP game 1 on 9/7 against the Yankees?
-
So, it’s been announced that Louie Varland from the Twins AAA affiliate the St. Paul Saints will pitch game 1 of the double header tomorrow against the Yankees. Thing is, he doesn’t show on the 40 man roster.
How do they do that?

You are allowed an extra player on days of a double header, thought it was 40 man players , but the replacements for covid positives and cant enter canada didnt need to be on the 40 man so im guessing since he is the extra player for the double header....

Could be. The first time I saw it announced was Monday before the doubleheader was set. I checked the 40-man and didn't see him, so I thought it was just someone posting from their...well...you know. Then, yesterday, the game was canceled due to the weather, and the doubleheader was set for today. That's when I saw the announcement from the Twins that he would start game 1 today.
I was going to load up on his card because he is the Twin's AAA best pitcher, and if he did well, he could stay up, and maybe his card would go silver or gold. But his card isn't in the game because he isn't on the 40-man.
I guess I'll just watch and wait.

The twins have a metric s-ton of players on IR, and a lot of times september call ups don't get added to the 40 man until the game starts that they get called up on. The rules for September call-ups are pretty strange in General though. A notable example was Brandon Finnegan for the Royals in 2014. Didn't get added to the 40 man until he got called up and pitched multiple times in the playoffs that year. Even if he was added to the 40 man today he wouldn't get added to the game until at least Friday
Long story short the twins haven't purchased his contract from AAA officially and would get added to the 40 man when they do

Thank you.
I didn't expect him in MLBTS today but when I went looking for him and didn't see him, that's when I checked the 40-man roster.
Thank you again, great explanation.

He’s on the 40 man now. He did ok. I don’t think we can call it stellar, though. He threw 80 pitches in 5 1/3, 7 Ks, and 2 runs (HR by Judge and inherited run after he was taken out).
His debut was in Yankee stadium, which must have been a terrifying thrill for the small town boy. I’ll have to keep my eyes on him.
