Just watched a great YouTube video about the history of baseball video games.
The overall point was this:
2k may have had a pretty lousy assortment of baseball games, and RBI and others were distant "also ran's" for your dollar, but they created a very important aspect-- probably the most important aspect in any market...Competition
I didn't expect it to be a lesson in free market economy, but at the end they basically said that due to lack of competition SDS has been cutting and pasting for almost 10 years.
We can't complain about a game when it's the only show in town.
Until another company pushes Sony to improve, it's just bad business to spend money on uphrades.Gotta find the link...

Sports video games have come to mirror the leagues they represent. There are natural monopolies the major sports leagues have because there's just no room for a competitor to join in, there are too few additional fans to win over and stay viable, and the barriers to entry are way too high.
There is no space for a true competitor now that games have gotten so expensive to develop, especially since the price of games today is way below what it was 20 years ago, adjusted for inflation. The leagues themselves are also wary of trusting their brand to an upstart company, and the major players in sports gaming are content keeping their monopolies in place so they don't risk challenging rivals to compete with each other, which would decrease all of their bottom lines.
Basically, competition is good, but it's not going to happen unless something major happens to the industry

For the 8 millionth time: anyone who says SDS doesn't have competition is lying. On purpose.
It's like saying "American Idol" doesn't have any competition whatsoever because there's no other first-run competitive televised singing competition that airs in their time slot.

In truth, capitalism and socialism are on a spectrum. Things tend to work better in the middle. The world’s happiest countries are in Europe for a reason.
I also don’t know of any influential socialists in the U.S. calling for an end to competition or capitalism. Quite the contrary, they want to break up monopolies and increase competition. Much like the first modern liberal president and self proclaimed socialist Teddy Roosevelt.
Speaking of World Wars, scapegoats are bad. The world is complicated and gray, embrace it. Blaming things on “smelly hippie socialists” is lazy and makes you look incapable of critical thought.

I used to switch back and forth between 2k and early versions of The Show on the PS2.
What 2k did so well was allowing for me and my friends to conduct an 8 team fantasy draft with a customizable smaller schedule. We would sim games against the cpu and play each other if we so chose to do so. Sometimes we would only play playoff series…then go into the offseason to sign FA and promote cpu generated prospects.
Long story short…sometimes a less detailed franchise mode is better than a more detailed mode. Either way, it was so much better than what we have had in MLBTS over the last decade.

I hear this same thing said about Madden or any other major sports game. I just don’t really get what are the new things they could add yearly? At this point in the games lifespan, it’s probably got all the features it’s going to get.
The real issue is the makers of sports games will continue to charge full price for graphics and roster updates. But that is what it is. At least this game isn’t 80% micro transactions like NBA 2k.

This is just you being pedantic. Obviously sds has "competition" from all other forms of entertainment someone could choose to enjoy instead of playing the show. But they have no direct competitor in their niche of someone looking to play a baseball video game, which is what people are talking about.

However, this is more manageable in such tiny countries.

They charge full price because enough people are willing to pay full price, they will stop once enough people aren't willing.
I'm one of those willing to because I still enjoy the game and enjoy starting DD from day one

They charge full price because enough people are willing to pay full price, they will stop once enough people aren't willing.

2K Baseball got a lot right. A lot wrong as well, but they couldve gotten better at Baseball games. It's too bad they seem scared to make Baseball again.
EA could get back in but I don't know if they want to.
Competition is less and less seemingly in every business. Look at how T Mobile bought Sprint and Metro PCS.
It's sad there's not much comp for Sports games. 2K owns hoops. NBA Live is no more. Madden has no comp. NHL has none. Something is wrong with this picture. -
