This new “timing” hitting option is giving breaks to less skilled players

Just stop. Timing/directional are terrible for online play. You would be far more successful center swinging with zone that using timing or directional, which are really designed for offline play.
not everyone plays online.

Some of us only play online when absolutely necessary (just not that good tbh, I wish it was different). I changed from directional at the end of The Show 20 to learning zone to try to give myself a better chance online when I have to play in those modes. Results have been mixed. Played all The Show 21 with zone (even moments, when far better players than me were switching to directional situationally!). I tried the first few games in Tech Test 22 with zone, of course, and playing online managed precisely 5 hits in 14 innings. To be fair, my opponents didn't do much better (one game was 11 innings and we 4-hit each other before I quit due to having to get ready for work). I decided to try the timing mode last night and won a BR game 3-0 with a homer. Very small sample size but it was nice to score my very first runs of the new game after so many innings of zero. I honestly don't know what I'll do -- I never found directional to any good online in the long haul -- so don't know if timing is any kind of viable option. What I do know is that if I keep putting up zero after zero after zero online playing with zone, I am definitely going to try other options. I know I'm not the greatest player, but being suddenly unable to score runs at all was a bit of a shock.

Keep this feature strictly offline. Online should be zone hitting only in my opinion

This is an albatross if this is included. It dumbs the skill level to simply pressing a button. They got rid of timing only for a reason before. I’d add directional to the list too. It’s basically timing with just moving the left stick in or out. The PCI should be the standard when playing online.

People always make the same argument when they lose a game and blame it on that saying "I know my opponent was using X". I can guarantee you there will be no players making top ranks exclusively using timing hitting method
-
I'm an average player at best. Last year I constantly got matched against people way outta my weight class they mauled me and I'm sure they enjoyed every bit of it. If timing helps me against these monsters than I'm all F'n in

Its for new players. To make the game simple and introduce them to the game. I think it's a good move business wise. Should have been in the game last year for newbie xbox players.
Zone is very difficult for a new player. I think they should make some kind of control setup intro screen when you first start like EA does. Timing would help new players immensely get use to how the game plays. I think defaulting to zone hitting turns off a lot of new players who find it too difficult and give up.
If they just always had the pci anchored to the middle it would be easier for the average person to hit.

I like options. I used zone since the first mlb show until a few years ago when I switched to directional.

I can’t wait to hear from all the top players and streamers that they switched to timing this year. I mean why wouldn’t they? It must be leaps and bounds better than zone based on some of the comments on the forum complaining about it.

This isn’t about it being “better”, or top players using it. It’s about the masses. There’s a straight up competitive imbalance when someone uses zone vs an opponent simply pressing a button. Especially in competitive games like a sports title. Top players are irrelevant in this discussion. They are the minority and will be top players regardless. It’s the rest of us just trying to get a fair a fun competitive game of baseball in. Hard to be fair the way it is now.
If SDS wants noobs to ease in, great. But online competitive play there should be an option to select Hitting style, added to the game search options.

“Timing” online tightens the gap between bad players and average/above average/good players. Great players will always hold that top minuscule percent. But I think this new hitting type will be a killing average to above average players with bailed out fouls and lucky bloop hits. Especially when playing those lower tier players that love exploiting CONTACT SWING button.

Wasn’t timing hitting in the game in some previous versions? Not sure when or if, but I thought it was. Like classic or something. If not, then it’s a great addition, if implemented correctly.
No doubt there will be some in-game adjustments when the timing hitting interface is used to increase the randomness of the outcome, much like the different pitching interfaces. That code would be an interesting read. I assume directional works much the same way.

To me this is just another excuse for average/below average players who think they are better than they really are. Another thing to blame losses on. People just need to accept where they are, me I'm average at best and I know I'm probably never going to be a top player but I still have fun.

I use to be a zone snob for many years. Now I like the game caters to everyone's style.
Maybe it was getting older, but Zone to me with the mega-zoomed in strikezone cameras felt like I was playing mechwarrior than baseball. Or some iphone mini game where I had to hit the ball in the little box.

It sounds like people are forgetting the need for accessibility. There are people who want to experience a baseball game and do not have the physical means to control with two hands for a spectrum of reasons.
Control what you can control: How you play.

If timing only is back in for online play no purchase. I’ve seen enough in the tech demo for my tastes.
-
I guarantee none of the whiners here even gave it a shot in custom practice vs Degrom on all-star+. I did and I can tell you, no one is beating a halfway decent zone player using timing.
-
I may switch to Timing/Directional this year. played the recent HOF difficulty Event and it's much harder to square up a ball vs these 102 mph pitches, meanwhile my opponents on Timing/Directional have gone yard on me more easily.
-
Tech test plays like [censored] on ps5 timing window very inconsistent. Alot of late hits and bad timed swings being rewarded
