Is 'challenge failed' really an error or is it a shadowban?

Today is a critical day. My annual PS+ subscription will go through tomorrow if I don't cancel it now. I wasn't planning on cancelling it. But that's a good amount of money.
The last 2 days, I have been unable to play RS because I get an error that says "challenge failed". I CAN play events, and I'm in an event game as we speak. But I'm a 9 inning kind of man. I'm not a big fan of 3 inning modes.
My question is, is this just a fluke that will resolve itself? Is this happening to anyone else? Or maybe did I get shadowbanned on RS and now it will only let me play events? If that's the case, I can't let this payment go through, ya dig? Gonna have to hang up the sticks.
Any insight would be appreciated my friends!

Challenge failed means 1 of 2 things, first is obvious, the other person left the matchmaking process before you got in. The second one is more difficult to diagnose and that’s a NAT error where your NAT is incompatible with your opponents NAT. If you are never making it to the stage where you choose your pitcher than you are probably experiencing NAT problems and should probably reset your network to get your NAT back to where it should be.

the weird thing is that events worked fine. But in true Murphy's Law fashion, the very next RS game I tried loading after posting this did actually work fine. I didn't expect it to, and I had to go #2 as the game loaded, so I messaged my opponent and said don't quit me out I'll BRB. By the time I got back to the screen, I had been forfeited as expected.
Good news is that this is working and I don't have to start reading books instead of playing PS4 over the next 12 months LOL!!!!
