Grew up in a time when the late inning suicide squeeze wasn't really used. Actually I dont think it's ever been used.

Anyway can someone explain the strategy to me in baseball?

Example, bot of the ninth - game is tied - runner on 3rd no outs or 1 out, what would be the scenario/strategy when a manager would suicide squeeze to win the game? And what count?

Honestly, it's one of those moves IRL where you're a genius if it works and a moron if it doesn't. The Run scores usually because you caught the defense off guard, the batter handles the bat well but is unlikely to get even a fly ball. The key is usually the lack of confidence in the hitter to drive in the run. Ironically, if the hitter has a high probability of striking out though, the likelihood of them laying down a quality bunt seems unlikely. If I'm the manager, I need an Ichiro like player to pull it off, but I also have confidence in his ability to put the ball where the defense ain't.

In DD, I imagine it stems from a fear of striking out and the belief that if you force the defense to make a mistake, you can win.

Well if its a squeeze bunt, you need a fast runner and a good or great bunter.
if its a suicide squeeze you just need a fast guy on third and to not miss or foul off the attempt, and hope a fast guy on 3rd doesnt get the defense thinking

A suicide squeeze is always a bunt. I can't say I've ever seen a hit and run with a runner taking off from third. Either way, nobody would refer to that as a suicide squeeze. A suicide squeeze is always a bunt. There is also a safety squeeze which is the same concept but the runner on third is waiting until the bunt is down to take off. Big aggressive lead just like the suicide squeeze.

If I'm a manager in this situation, this is what i'd be considering (Maybe not plan for, but at least consider depending on whose at the plate). A Safety Squeeze. Runner isn't going full tilt for home. And the hitter is trying to bunt the ball deep enough in the infield that there is no chance for a play at home. Especially with the new Extra Innings Rule. Now, runner on Second and Third, 0 outs...I may consider a suicide. Even if the runner is tagged at home, you've got another runner on third with 1 out.

There would be a lot of variables at play. One would be, guy on 3rd one out, you have your 7 hitter up. The 8 hitter is your catcher on deck, in the hole is 9 the pitcher who you would pinch hit for but odds of getting to him are low. Now for the pitcher, does he throw strikes, is he a high strike out guy, or more finesse? Versus a high strike out guy you put the squeeze on as putting the ball in play becomes a bigger issue. Obviously with a power pitcher who might not have command you look for the walk. You also have to be careful because you have to get a decent pitch to bunt. Bunting is truly a lost art. In BP we would have to get two down, one to 3rd and one to 1st before you could take any real swings. Now days the analytics are all about exit velocity and power. You can strike out 200 times but if you hit 40 bombs no one cares. So no it is not a play you would make in modern baseball. It drives me crazy when the shift defense for a lefty and the hitter could just bunt the ball down the line for an easy single maybe even a double. Instead they swing away and roll the ball over right into the shift for an easy out.

As an opposing manager I’m walking the batter and forcing a double play possibly walking bases loaded for a play at any base

a suicide squeeze is a steal of home and if batter doesnt get bunt down......thats why they call it suicide.
Edit- its also why you ll see some teams pitch out on the first pitch with a fast guy on 3rd

    Man, I miss small ball.

I wish bunting wasn't so glitched in this game, it's near impossible for me to sac runners over in crucial points in the game. Real shame.

Ask Greg Maddox as he was of the best bunters IRL. But like others said it’s such a situational thing that you’ll never see it.

Plus players today don’t really know how to bunt.
