First Baseman Won't Wait at the Bag for a 9-3 Putout

SDS

In MLB 19 and MLB 20, I would get the occasional (but relatively rare) 9-3 putout, in which the RF fields a ball that lands in front of him and fires it to 1B before the runner can get there. Naturally, it was easier to do this when the runner didn't have much speed. It was rare, but oh was I giddy when it did happen.

I've been playing MLB 21 since early release, but I haven't gotten close to a 9-3 putout yet, because this time around the first baseman won't be waiting on the first base bag. No matter who it is (this goes for primary first basemen and players who have 1B as a secondary position), he will always be standing to the left of the bag (his left) by a few yards.

Vladdy Jr. allowed Yadier MOLINA, who has 0 speed, to reach first even though my right fielder threw the ball accurately to him, because he was yards away from the bag. Standing there, staring at Lofton like a blockhead.

I have the defensive positioning set to "straight up" for every batter. I assumed that the first baseman would get into position naturally, just as the second baseman or shortstop do to tag a runner out if they advance too far to 2B. This has not happened.

Did SDS change the fielding in a way that made 9-3 putouts impossible? Or is there something that I'm doing wrong?

This is against the CPU, by the way. Not online.

I believe they coded them to be nearly - if not completely - impossible this year.

Nice icon! I strongly believe this was a good move. 9-3 put outs are extremely rare irl and were too common previously in the game.

Yeah, I think they perhaps struggled to fix it with programming so they went all in on the first baseman. I miss doing it to the super slow folks though.

I had a play the other day where Bichette got to the ball quickly, and threw it to Thome who was on the bag. Thome proceeded to STEP OFF THE BAG to catch the ball just so it wouldn't be an out

Not online they weren't. People would move their RF shallow and any line drive to right field was a close play at first even with 70+ speed players. I had a lot of perfect perfect 9-3 putouts against me last year.

Toward the end of MLB 20, I saw far too many I would like to admit on players with 50-70 speed. I understand if you're throwing out Grandal or Posada, but a 50-70 speed should pretty much beat the 9-3. I think one could have said it was broke to an extent, unfortunately.

I can understand making them rare, but they're just flat out impossible now. They coded the first baseman to stand yards away from the bag like an idiot. Vladdy Jr. keeps getting earfuls from me

Yeah, I think they perhaps struggled to fix it with programming so they went all in on the first baseman. I miss doing it to the super slow folks though.

They were rare anyways before they changed it. If it ain't broke...

Not online they weren't. People would move their RF shallow and any line drive to right field was a close play at first even with 70+ speed players. I had a lot of perfect perfect 9-3 putouts against me last year.

I play against the CPU though.

Fair enough. Online is why they fixed it. Against the CPU it wasn't an issue. It's unfortunate that the online community essentially ruins an exciting play. I used to get really excited to do it vs the computer.

EXACTLY! They're already trying to ruin the logo vault by complaining about obscene logos and calling for the logo vault to be shut down. I've seen some creative and detailed logos that ppl probably put HOURS into, and I would hate for them not to share their work because of some bad eggs.

I haven't really seen anyone call for the logo vault to be shut down, just monitored more closely

Some guy was arguing with me saying that it should be shut down, dismissing my suggestions that they could use an algorithm to police the logos or have the logos submitted to a review process before they could be used. Poor guy didn't like my reasonable argument lol. I just hope it doesn't get taken too far to the point that it would be shut down, that's my worry.

I had a play the other day where Bichette got to the ball quickly, and threw it to Thome who was on the bag. Thome proceeded to STEP OFF THE BAG to catch the ball just so it wouldn't be an out

I've had the same animation a number of times. It's pretty obvious they coded it so it's pretty much impossible.

It's a shame. It truly is. Apparently this is a game where I can throw perfect games, no-hitters, and immaculate innings, and where I can hit for the cycle, but where I'm not allowed to get a 9-3 putout. 😞
