Question about stealing

Hello, I haven't played this game in so long I could be considered a newbie. My create a player in the show 20 is stuck at his capped speed of 50 and the manager keeps asking me to steal. I have had a couple of blown calls where I was clearly safe but called out for some reason. Otherwise I have no complaints about my failed attempts.

My question is that I take more than the base lead and I get the throw over (a graduation from instant pick off that I finally solved), so I don't have the wheels to straight out steal. Any suggestions would be helpful.
