R2 is simply the batter holding up his hand in the batters box for the umpire to slow down the pitcher until he is ready, so it most definitely has a purpose in this game. I use R2 but only to see confidence or check patterns. I will use it occasionally for quick pitching, which I am guilty of sometimes also. I have not seen anyone hold R2 as others are saying, however, I have seen numerous players try and speed through pitching when I have players on base to try and cheese me. This is a much bigger problem than holding R2 in my experience. Turn balks on and R2 off and the problem is solved.
Excellent that’s why I suggested 3 seconds to hold R2 once per at bat to simulate this hands up to ump that happens in real life. You explained it much better than me.
My question is do you use Pin Point pitching? I do and many others do and I would say about half of the people I play when they figure out that I am using PPP press R2 multiple times an at bat to try to mess me up.

Lord have mercy this community is a special kind the biggest problem with the R2 is that you can press it multiple times per at bat. My solution will end that
Your solution is great except it won't satisfy some of the R2 pressers. Some have stated directly on here that they "spam" (their word) R2 every time they feel quick-pitched (subjective obvs). There's no making them happy unless they can flick R2 whenever they want and they've stated as much.
Yeah to hell with those people don’t care for them.
This exactly is the problem.
“To Hell with these people” means everyone stubbornly just keeps doing what they’re doing and hopes mommy and daddy at SDS will wave their magic wand to make R2 go away.
Did you even read the suggestion there smart guy? Go back and read it doesn’t take R2 away
So I call you out and you start the insults eh?
And people wonder why online play is toxic.
Did you read what I said?
You just flat out said you don’t care about your opponent, then borderline insulted me because I pointed it out.
The only “solution” to this and other online issues, is for players to stop being a$$holes to their opponents.
Called me out on what? And yeah I don’t care for players who Spam R2 multiple times an at bat to throw my pitch off sorry...
And did you read my solution it’s the first post and I’m sorry that saying “smart guy” offended you
I did read your OP.
Look, this issue has been debated on here for years, just like the extra step lead and the step-off/throw over counter.
At least now that SDS made the R2 visible to your opponent, more players recognize that is a problem.
As I mentioned in another post, these issues all but disappear when you are playing with friends or in a custom league. If your buddy asks you to slow your pitching down a bit, or says he has to go take a pee, you’re ok with that.
The minute people start playing competitively against strangers is where the exploits and disrespect start.
Maybe your proposed solution would help, maybe not. I still think the root of the problem is the community itself.
All I ask is just ONE Press of R2 per pitch so these real R2 spammers that abuse it will end.

I do not use pinpoint and that sounds like a different problem and R2 issue entirely. One that needs to be addressed. Either way, getting rid of R2 without having balks, or, having balks and keeping R2 are not viable solutions. If pitchers have to come set before a pitch is thrown it fixes this entirely. On a completely different note, I really wish they would get rid of the pause button or drastically reduce the timer. Pausing to me is a much bigger issue, if you are not ready to play then don’t start a game or quit, don’t leave the opponent hanging for minutes at a time.

Should they just take away the option to call time as a batter? It's the same thing.......
Calling time doesnt result in a meatball being thrown. It can with R2.

Again I didn’t suggest getting rid of R2. A simple fix would again just be One Uno press of R2 per pitch

I know you didn’t. However only having the option to use it once per at bat does not solve the problem of pitchers spamming pitches as quickly as possible in an attempt to catch the hitter of guard. That is why I say simply have the pitcher come set and remove R2 and the problem is solved. They could eliminate balks and not have location pop up until after he is set so there would be no balk risk.
Edit: and i see you said per pitch which would be fine also

Respectfully I disagree. A batter needs the option to slow down a pitcher. Your plan would be 3 seconds and then rapid fire pitches every at bat.
There should be a 2 second window before each pitch where the pitcher can't pitch. A pitch every 2 seconds is plenty fast for pace of play, and 2 seconds is long enough to do whatever you want with the r2. It removes the cheese because for those 2 seconds the pitcher won't be able to start their windup and after those 2 seconds the batter can no longer r2. I would almost guarantee the time between most pitches in most online games is ~2 seconds anyway.
.
You mean you want a chance to mess up someone’s timing.
You don’t care about slowing down, you want to throw off the pitcher when he is starting delivery.
He wants a 2 second window where you can't throw a pitch. Seems pretty clear to me.
Yesterday an online opponent was pressing R2 before almost every single pitch. I would wait a few seconds after the pressing-R2 icon disappeared to make sure my pitch wasn't going to get f-ed with, and then the icon would pop up again. In other words, they were pressing R2 (for more than 2 seconds), I wouldn't pitch immediately due to R2 having been pressed, and then they would press R2 again. All before one single pitch is thrown. This scenario is indefensible by the 'I need more time' crowd and the 'I'm just looking up information' crowd. There's clear intention to disrupt the pitcher, and I'm certain R2 is used mostly in this way. And it is not baseball, that's 100% clear too. I said to my partner, who dislikes most sports in real life and certainly dislikes sports video games, "There's a feature in the game where you can freeze the pitcher" (and then showed it to him on a vs CPU game) and he sarcastically replied, "Yeah, like you could do that in a real game!" Honestly, this is clear even to baseball outsiders.
It is baseball though. The batter can step out of the box as often as he wants for as long as he wants. That’s r2

Sorry, that's incorrect. The batter can request time from the ump. That's down on the d-pad. I don't know what R2 is but it ain't asking for time. For example, observe what happens when the batter uses R2 in the game. Does the ump grant time? Nothing actually happens. It's just a weird freeze that unfortunately can screw with gameplay.

No he can’t. The ump would eventually tell the pitcher to pitch.

Now wait a minute here, "a batter needs to have a way to slow down a pitcher" ??? A batter has absolutely no control over when a pitcher is to pitch.
R2 should not be allowed to stop anything, if you want time, call time, that is real baseball. R2 should still be able to display info, but not stop the pitchers meter.
In principle, I agree with you, but there are people who pitch as fast as they can, and there absolutely needs to be a mechanism to neutralize that.

Allow only One Press of R2 PER AT Pitch at 3 seconds your choice.
This will satisfy both sides....
Side One (Your not going to quick pitch me clan) They can slow down the at bat by 3 seconds whatever you choose.
Side Two (messing with my PPP or other pitching clan) once they see that they pressed R2 they know it can’t happen again that at bat so they don’t have to worry.
Or you can suck it up and watch for the icon at the top when it appears and wait til it disappears and then pitch instead of posting some elaborate "fix" that noone gets behind

Not sure if it was in this thread or another that I described this, but I'm going to repeat myself because this is important for some people to realise -- you can do exactly this, on every pitch, and they'll just press it again. I know this because I experienced it on every pitch during online gameplay recently. R2 being pressed, I would wait. It would stop, and I would give it a second or two just to make sure, and then it would be pressed again. Eventually I would get to pitch but are you really suggesting that just waiting out nearly 200 R2 presses is the best solution here? What possible justification could there be for pressing R2 at least twice before every pitch?
Before someone jumps in that I was quick-pitching and this is how to slow me down, please consider that because I was waiting for R2 pressing to stop twice before every pitch, that it would be impossible for me to be quick-pitching. Obviously.

Balks only works with runners on base so it ain’t a fix
