It's not really a moot point. When a player retires, SDS needs to negotiate with them to get their rights in the game. They rarely, if ever target players that have retired in the past 3-4 years. They usually go after players who are legitimate legends (Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Pedro Martinez, etc), or players who have been out of the game long enough and are fan favorites or interesting enough to create some buzz (Rick Ankiel in 19, Tino Martinez in 20 and 21, Prince Fielder this year).
Never say never, Ichiro could potentially happen, but it is a long shot based on past precedent.
