He should go diamond with the way he’s been hitting

And what about Cruz? Dude's outhit him consistently and he can't sniff diamond... You gotta play D and run a bit to get diamond imo... JD does none of those things..

Um JD was diamond last year (and imo shouldn't have been dropped back to a gold to start this year) and looking at his #s he's outhit Cruz the last 2 full MLB seasons.

I agree with you neither is a huge help defensively or on the base paths. But as for hitting at least recently it's JD > Cruz.

The last time JD outhit Cruz was 2018...

    Cruz 2019 - 169 wRC+
    JD 2019 - 140 wRC+

And 2020 of course we won't even go there.
My point is Cruz is insane and still can't sniff diamond... JD shouldn't either, especially with that bad '20 mixed in.

but we are talking only about 2021 and Cruz isnt close

Why are we only talking about 2021??? They go by 3 year averages.

okay.... entire career then.... J.D. is the better overall hitter than Cruz. look at the side byy side numbers and it would be tough to argue Cruz better than Martinez. Cruz has had a couple strong years lately, but J.D. is far more consistent.... cruz is only a career .270 hitter averaging less hits, HR, and R.B.I per season than Martinez. J.D. had a terrible season last year, but is top 5 in almost everything hitting this year and Cruz isnt even on the lists.... is he even playing this year?

Wow.. incredible ignorance in your response.

First off, Cruz is almost 41 years old.. the fact he's still productive is something JD Martinez can only hope for when his career winds down. Judging by the fact he's a DH already at 33 years old isn't a good thing.

Secondly, ya, Cruz is playing. How stupid of a comment to ask if he is or isn't.. just tells me you're going off the cuff with your bias..
He's got a 141 OPS+ at 40 years old.. sure, it's not JD's 162 this year, but we will forgive him when he's one of the oldest players in the league.

    Now, let's get into career.

Cruz 134 OPS+ career hitter for 17 seasons.
JD 136 OPS+ career hitter for 11 seasons.

Almost identical. Cruz just has been doing it a lot longer..

Over their last 4 years, let's compare, since this is when they are both useless on defense.

    Cruz 160 OPS+
    JD 147 OPS+

Hmmm.. and Cruz is almost 8 years older...

JD isn't more consistent. Last year proves that. Cruz is the model of consistency, shown by the fact he's 40 and still an elite hitter. Martinez is better right now, because he should be. He's 33 years old! But he can only hope to continue to be productive like Cruz..

And the fact remains, Martinez should be similarly rated to Cruz. As over the last 3 years, they're almost the same.

there isnt a GM in baseball that would pick Cruz over Martinez.... hence the massive difference in pay.

    Lol. Cruz is almost 41!!

There isn't a GM in baseball that would take on JD's entire contract to DH...

All this proves is Dombrowski made a mistake and Boston is saddled with it.

My model tells me J.D. needs minimum 112/118 contact and 110/107 power to get to an 85 given his other stats. I don't see that happening, but it's possible that they juice up one of his peripheral hitting stats (clutch, vision, discipline) to get him there if they want him there.

It's a good investment, but I wouldn't call it a sure thing. He's been hovering in the low 70%'s on my model and thus far we haven't seen anybody make it this year from there on the hitters' side.

Cruz has not been more consistent... if you subtract last years half season from J.D. career... hes a career .300 hitter with a better ops and more R.B.I per at bat. cruz is a career .270 hitter.... not great honestly.

As over the last 3 years, they're almost the same.

your obviously a Cruz homer.... not worth arguing. i would pick J.D. over Cruz anyday... but thats my opinion. good luck to your Jays... how many times you guys been in the playoffs last 10 years???? oh.... thats right, nevermind.

Oh, surprise.. more ignorance and stupid responses.
I don't even personally like Cruz. I just know how to look up actual statistics instead of going off my own biases.
Anyone would take JD over Cruz lol. Cruz is almost 41 years old!! Jeesh...

And I don't know what my Jays have anything to do with it, but we've been to the playoffs 3 times in the last 10 years... Judging by your lack of knowledge, I'm going to guess you didn't know that. Lol

dude.... you are comparing how many seasons they had a 2 guys were ahead a specific ops.... Cruz has played in twice as many years! ....and im ignorant? J.D. has been better in yearly avg. in the seasons they've played.

....btw, how is being a Blue jays fan anyways???? lol

I compared the last 4 years. Do you know how to read!?! I also compared OPS+, not cumulative stats.
I don't think you comprehend baseball statistics.

And it's great being a Jays fan! Thanks for asking! We have an incredible young core, headlined by the MVP of the league thus far who's 22 years old, and one of the best farm systems in the sport.. great time for Jays fans.

By the way, when you compare players and refer to batting average or RBI, you're embarrassing yourself.. if you refer to both, you should just stop talking.

Should we not count last year because it destroys your argument?
