What are exchanges?

I know I'm getting rid of some cards but what exactly am I exchanging them for???

Depends on which exchanges you're talking about.
Common for Bronze...Bronze for Silver....Silver for Gold are self explanatory

You can exchange for points to advance in programs too ... Quite frankly ... Doesn't worth it ...

So putting those towards collections (if applicable) is a better idea??

There are exchanges in the daily missions and in the player programs too. There were exchanges in the PotM programs last year, and that caused some positions or teams to increase in value.
