Understanding Crossplay

Trying to be understand how cross play works. I have next gen console, Xbox Series X, and my friend has a Xbox One. If he plays on the current gen version of the game and i play next gen version of the game, can we play each other? Does cross play include cross generations of the game? Or would i have to have the version of the game on my series X console that is compatible with Xbox One.

Everyone can play everyone, so you and your friend can play together. There will be both cross platform (Playstation to Xbox) and cross gen play (Xbox One to Series X). We don't know exactly how that will work yet (I assume some kind of unified account system like Rocket League), but one of the devs has confirmed on here that we will have more information soon.

As far as playing with your friend goes, that is correct. However, there are some advantages to the dual entitlement if you have multiple consoles.
For example, I have both a PS4 and PS5. I'm sure 95% of my play time will come on the PS5, but if my wife wants the TV downstairs I could still play on the PS4 in the bedroom. If I travel over the summer, I'll probably bring the PS4 with me since it is smaller and less fragile. I could pick up what I was doing in Diamond Dynasty without missing a beat. Cross progression is a pretty nice feature.
If you also have an Xbox One somewhere around the house, the extra $15 might be worth it to you for the added flexibility, plus you get extra packs and such in the Jackie Robinsion edition. Of course since you are on Xbox, you do also have the option of playing it via Game Pass if you have a subscription.

What if i have a ps5 and my friend has a last gen xbox one? Could we get some official clarification from sds on the subject? Thank you!

Collin (one of the SDS devs) has already confirmed this on the forum in a thread a few weeks back. Everyone can play everyone. That includes last gen on one platform to next gen on the other.
