I use default and my runners constantly over run bases and do ridiculous things that make zero sense.

It costs me a ridiculous amount of runs.

    Input?

me too but I'm done trying to bother with the current game and just praying that TS21 isn't garbo. Base running seemed better in the beta but we will see how much they bait and switch us once the game actually launches

No competition - classic (avoiding L1 and R1).

Yeah I was going to ask about L1 and R1. If you use those, especially at 2b, they seem to overrun the base.

On the most recent blog post/interview they vaguely mention that there will be some improvements with runner control using default. They specifically mentioned shenanigans with multiple runners on using L1 and R1, so maybe they add something making it more reliable and responsive, hopefully.

Running the bases was sort of messy this year. I never tried classic though.

One you go classic (buttons and d-pad) and realise you don’t have to hold the button (took me years of botching runners to realise that) you’ll never use anything else again. That’s a flat out guarantee.

You can still use buttons with default. Highlight the runner with left stick and press button to desired base.

I use default but thought it was classic and one of the most common mistakes i see people having issues with baserunning is they are not using analog stick to designate which runner they want to advance.

For instance if i have runner on 1rst and 2nd and i only want guy on 2nd to steal then i would have to move L analog toward 2nd and then L1 and if not wanting to not advance 1rst move analog direction toward 1rst and hit R1. After pitch 2nd will steal 1rst will stay. If runners are advancing while ball is in play L analog direction of base then R1 or L1 for advance or return.

True. But that takes a little more time. The reason I’ll always push for classic is that in default baserunning you have to use the left stick to select a player so you need to rely on the physical movement of the stick, then your eyes to see that it has selected the right player and your brain then needs to process that it is the desired player then you need to press the button. The stick movement takes just that little bit of extra time, and the seeing it and reacting to what you’ve seen is the bit that takes the longest.

With classic, you can cycle through all four runners (if there are four) and direct each of them individually to their destination in under a second total. Not a second each - all four in under a second. You can then make adjustments from there if necessary, eg stopping the batter at first if you thought it was a double when it’s actually a single.

Except in online it seems you need to double tap the runner button for some reason as it doesn’t seem to like the first press, so online may take 1.5-2 seconds to direct them all.

Default can be annoying when your have two guys close to the same base .... but overall it’s seems fine to me. I may try classic and see if this guys right about advancing bases easier

As ‘this guy’ I can endorse your comment. Trust me mate, it may take quite a few games to get used to but it’s worth it.

One caveat though, as runners round a base their button changes to the next in anti clockwise direction. It’s only a problem if you need to return runners and only then minor. I’ve been campaigning for them to fix it for years. Let’s hope it does in 21.
