Almost every time I bunt in this game, I bunt into a double play. Any tips on how to get better at this aspect of gameplay? Is it all user error or just not a very well designed element?

If you’re referring to anything from MLB The Show 18 (I think) to MLB The Show 20, you’re playing the ‘butchered legitimate bunting’ edition of the game. Bunting across the whole game was destroyed to eliminate rogue users using it as a way to get cheap wins in DD multiplayer modes.
If you’re playing 21 then I can’t help you as I didn’t participate in the test.
