What are bat skins for?

Good question. In Diamond Dynasty, the bat skin is just for look. In Road To The Show, and for your Create A Player in Diamond Dynasty (The one exception in DD) they help with your attributes. Hope this makes sense!

I think lighter colored bat skins, with more white in them, help match to the ball when hitting.
