Year to year DD players
-
On my second year of DD and so I began to wonder. Doesn't a player such as Babe Ruth and Griffey Jr. get released every year? And what I mean is that their attributes never change, correct? So it seems that after a full year of a new game aren't we stuck with a lot of the same players all the time minus a handful of new additions.
So what would be the incentive to buy a new game every year given this perception I have?
I understand it's my choice to buy a game or not, but it makes it tough if I ultimately end of with the same end game squad for the most part. -
Last year Signature Babe Ruth had 125 everything hitting. They don't always release the same card of each player every year, sure there are repeats. Cards are released in different ways every year as different awards and programs. They also add new legends and future stars.
-
Because 30+ New legends are added every year. Sure Babe and Griffey will be there, but they are usually released in different ways. Say you played 19 but not 20, you miss out on MAntle, Biggio, Sheffield, Rivera, Ortiz, Thome, the Braves trio, and more

This is my third full year playing DD. We are now at the part in the game cycle where I decide I’m going to take a year off of the game and then they announce a new legend or two that makes my credit card self-aware and it preorders the game for me.

Ppl act like they're forced to play the same cards every year

That's not what I am saying. Im saying we don't have to have the same players EVERY year, such as Ruth. Is there something wrong with him not being in the game every so often?

Taking him out is a stupid idea. It's not all about us, the ones who come back year to year...there's new audiences every single year.

I play the game for the competitive aspect. If u play the previous year’s game rather than the newer one, the game will be completely dead and the comp will be nonexistent
-
If there's one area SDS did extremely well this year, it is the variety of different cards.
Whether you like the cards or not (coughFutureStarscough), you have to admit that there are so many 99s in the game that you can have lineup diversity while also keeping the Ruth/Griffey/Chipper fans happy.

Want do you want them to do? Invent new baseball players? They also added a ton of new guys you could use this year with the future stars/ prospects!
-
I enjoy building up my team each year, starting fresh. That's my incentive to buy the next game.
-
This too is my second year of DD, buy I have found that some cards played very different for me this year, changing who I played with. For example last year Duke Snider was my guy, but I couldn't hit with him this year for some reason. I couldn't hit with Cal Ripken's Sig last year. But enjoyed his awards card this year. I feel like some cards will always be favorites, but every year will be a little different. Also, I played a lot with a 1980s theme team last year. This year I play with a 90s team which is much different.

With the sig series/awards/prime setup they’ve created the ability to put out slightly different versions of the exact same player (compare any award series or prime from this year to the sig series of the same player from last year. The attributes are different)

Yeah, I’ve played since ‘16 and although they do a good job with mixing up the programs and various card series, it’s basically the same game, but just wearing a new hat and jacket every year. The main problem isn’t the content being somewhat repetitive, they have to work with what’s available and we get a good selection of new legends each year usually. The problem is the gameplay. They don’t make enough effort to make the gameplay feel improved from year to year, indeed they have actually taken retrograde steps in many aspects, such as pitching, while continuing to make the same basic mistakes, like the catcher meter not working, or outfielders not playing balls near walls. It’s a straight copy and paste from year to year.
The same old, same old commentary doesn’t help much, nor the fact that much of the content now revolves around moments, or things that are closely related to moments, such as showdown, as moments themselves may be the most boring and repetitive aspect of the game. Even from week to week, they’re repetitive - “Hit one Home Run”, “Pitch 6 innings while striking out 10 batters and not allowing a run” and of course, “Player locked as some schmuck with a 74 overall LS card, Get 3 XBH with this ridiculously juiced 96 overall card we invented” Blah, blah, blah.
You’d hope for something new with the game heading to next gen and multiple platforms, but it feels like SDS are afraid to break away from their current formula and shake things up, preferring to tweak and restyle here and there, as opposed to creating something that feels new and different. I’m shocked we haven’t seen any new stadiums, competitive game modes or control mechanics added in my half decade as a MLB the Show player, you’d expect more from them in that kind of time span.

For me part of the fun is the grind to get to that end game team. I like starting with a crappy team and getting to grind toward getting better players for each position and seeing my lineup and pitching rotation fill up with good players.

I took a few years off from the Show. I used to play Franchise Mode, and had some form of a baseball game from 97 or so to 2017. I found myself barely playing 17 but wanted it because Judge was on the cover (devout Yankees fan here) when 18 was released I purchased it our of ritual, but rarely played it. I decided I wouldn't play 19 at all. I think in October of 19 playstation released it for free as its game of the month to playstation plus users. I downloaded it to my library but never played. Back in April of this year as the pandemic required me to WFH and the kids moved to remote schooling I finally installed 19. While the franchise mode was still lacking I instantly became obsessed with Diamond Dynasty. I had been playing MyTeam on NBA2K for a few years already, but found Diamond Dynasty to be more rewarding. Even though I was playing a year old game, I was in love with the mode and how rewarding if felt for players. In August 2020 I finally purchased MLB The Show 20, and my son and I have played it nonstop since. It is hands down my favorite of the sports game, and IMHO the most rewarding for the grind. I will definitely purchase Th Show 21 and be on that grind from the start of the season!
