Am I the only one who refuses to let opponents take an extra step?

Strategy people.
I like to take a one step lead at least a few times.
Usually I have no plans to steal, but I want to make sure my opponent sees that I just might, especially with a runner on first with higher speed. If they throw over more than 3 times though, I'll not take that 1st step. However, I may take a step again and then quickly step back to the normal leadoff.
The idea is to get their attention on that runner and hopefully slide step one too many times and throw a meatball or at the very least have to alter their pitching strategy.
I notice this only works for 1st base. If you try to take leadoff at second you can get picked very easily with a one step lead - even with a runner with a high stealing attribute and if you quickly get back to the base. (Note with two outs, the SS or 2nd base arent as close to the bag though so you can safely take that one step lead.)

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong when stealing? No matter how perfect of a release i get with L2, the runner is always delayed before he runs. The only way I can steal is if I release L2 a good half second before they start there throwing motion. 9 times out of 10, it's either a really bad jump or I run before he starts the throwing motion.
Is it really just lag from my TV?
- Don’t get a lead
- Tap L2 immediately when you are wanting to steal. Don’t try to time it up yourself. When you tap L2 the cpu will start the runner for you, You don’t have to worry about it. This is where RNG is your friend. If your runner has a high steal rating & base running rating he’ll get a good jump 8 out of 10 times.

Unless people are being ridiculous and continue to step off rather than go into shifts and have a fielder hold @ 2nd. It happens more often than you’d think.

This is what irks me - you can easily go into shifts and have your defender hold at the base if you really care so much. It’s not “putting yourself out of position”. It’s sacrificing positioning for holding the runner close. It happens irl.
I’m also not sure you understand the situation I mean. I’m talking about runner on 2nd two outs, or the trail runner with a guy on third. The default defense doesn’t hold the runner on at second. Therefore when you pick off to second, the game freezes for a sec and I can see the shortstop or 2B runner to the base. So I press RB to go back to the base.
As long as I am paying attention you will never pick me off in this situation. Yet I’ve run into multiple people who refuse to hold me on at second, yet they care enough to continuously attempt pickoffs when it’s impossible to get me out. Are you one of those people? Or are you talking about when your running is positioned to hold by default (runner at 1st, or 2nd <2 out)?

I am one of those people who doesn't adjust my defense to hold runners on at 2nd, but still continuously steps off if you take an extra step.
The reason is because even if I adjust my middle infielders, the likelyhood of a successful pick off is just about as high as throwing the ball away.
You aren't doing anything wrong per say. IRL if a baseball team is going to allow a big lead or defensive indifference then absolutely I expect a smart player to take it. However this is a video game and the outcomes if I play "smart baseball" by adjusting my defensive positioning don't reward me enough for the sacrifice of playing close to the bag.
The extra step does however reward the baserunner, especially on those close plays at the plate.
If I step off continuously it's my version of playing "smart baseball" within the limits of the game.

It’s been over 10 minutes since I threw my last pitch. My opponent keeps taking the extra step, I keep stepping off. I don’t wanna throw over, because in my last game I threw the ball away twice on pickoffs. This is ridiculous. The runner has too much of an advantage in the run game and i have to engage in yet another toxic meta-game with an exploiter to just try to keep the game as balanced as possible. SDS I really need some thing to prevent this

Don't give in. As I said I've literally won every battle. Eventually people will stop taking the step.
You're right this is something that needs fixing. More punishment for those taking a larger lead (basically, more successful pick offs) seems like the obvious answer.

I always pick to first with an extra step but rarely to second. As a runner at second with no one holding you on the bag, you're supposed to get as much as you can.

Why doesnt SDS fix this issue. It's been an issue for several years. It just adds frustration to the game.

In my experience I get picked off at 2nd 90% of the time I take an extra step when being held on. Give it a try.

If someone's taking an extra step consistently, I'll either pick them off or throw a high fastball out of the zone, a pitch-out that doesn't look like a pitch-out during the pitcher's animation. If they're attempting to steal, they're toast. If they have taken two extra steps or aren't paying enough attention, every once in a while my catcher will pick them off at first.
Either way, it's not a big issue to me, and it seems like a very odd thing about which to become flustered/annoyed.

Had to revive this. Had a guy this morning that kept taking extra lead off 2nd with 99 speed, complained I kept throwing over. Picked him off eventually. I get a guy on first in next half inning, he threw over 3 times, most he could since I wasn’t taking an extra lead. Yelli hits a bomb to RF that went out of ballpark, Pittsburgh since it was event and I usually don’t replay, but he got to re-live all 453 feet of it on replay.
