You just have to not care about anything. I played the other day and won almost every game. The last two sessions I’ve had, I think I’ve lost every single game. Half a dozen losses in a row maybe. I didn’t really feel any different after either session. I wasn’t elated when I won and I wasn’t angry or disappointed when I lost. I had a slight pang of regret that my SP got torched and ruined their ERAs but it was inevitable at some point. I play just to play the game, win or lose.
Now, this might seem like a strange concept to some of you and maybe even an impossibility. I’d suggest looking at the reasons why the game makes you emotional. While it’s not a particularly terrible thing to be emotionally invested in a video game, it can be an issue if you overdo things. There is a scale for everything and in terms of being emotionally invested in MLB the Show, I’ve gone from a nine or ten out of ten (Breaking expensive controllers, shouting and swearing at the game, fist pumping when I do get calls etc.) to an absolute zero, where I can show little to no reaction to being mercied at Shippet by a directional hitter with terrible input.
One key was taking the time to spend a couple of weeks each year flipping cards and not really playing. I generally wait for a while, as margins are not generous in the early stages of the year and options are not as plentiful in the marketplace, as well as a lot of the cards I want for my end game team have not been released yet. I’ll then devote all my playing time to working the market for ten days or so and come away with enough stubs to purchase every card I want. This negates a lot of the pressure of having to reach WS because I simply have to have SS Chris Sale or needing to go 12-0 because I will rage quit forever if I don’t get SS Chipper as soon as possible.
Psychologically, that’s huge. You’re playing with the cards you want to play with for fun. Say you want Mays. You buy him, when your order fills, you go play ranked to try him out. Maybe you make WS and get another Willie to sell, in which case he was almost free. Compare that to grinding your teeth as you grind your way towards 900, focused on getting Willie Mays at last, only to reach 886 and lose two games on the bounce, despite having better input than your opponent and being back to 830 all over again. Gah!!
Another type of player who inevitably gets frustrated are the ultra competitive ones. These players can have every card in the game plus a billion stubs, but they play to win and get frustrated when they lose. This is the hardest type of frustration to overcome. If you can’t have fun when you’re losing, you’re going to get mad. Nobody wins every single time. The problem with this subset of players is they’ll tell you that they can enjoy losing a close game “if somebody outplays me, they deserve to win, I can accept that!” The truth is, they can’t accept that at all. When they do get outplayed, you’ll find they blame the game, they make wild claims about how much better inputs they made and how the game is broken and it robbed them. It’s not the fact they lost that made them angry, it’s the way the game made it happen and so on. Truth is - They’re sore losers who get frustrated if they don’t win. If this is you, be honest with yourself, own it and accept that you can’t always win. You’ll have more fun in the long run, I promise.
