Latency, pitch speeds, and user input ...
-
So I have been playing a fair amount this year, and lately a lot of ranked. I’ve logged over 200 ranked games mainly from 6-900. I have encounters so much variation in pitch speeds even when I am home team in the same stadium. For example I played a game recently against gio’s new topps now no hitter card. He was blowing 93 past me , I couldn’t catch up unless I completely sold out without reading the pitch. I can “read” dibble and all the flamethrowers on hof and have good results. This guy wasn’t even pitching in any special way I just could not catch up, extremely late. The game just got weird too.... like there was a slight lag from my user input to the action in the game. A few milliseconds , something minimal but noticeable.
I’m hardwired, nothing changes on my end.
I just played a separate game and from the first pitch I knew there was no latency, the bat swang the instant I pressed x, 100 was easy to read, as was off speed. I was getting great results the whole game, my user input was dead on. Games that are that smooth with minimal latency are hard to come by and it’s hard to adjust on the fly when you get a “bad game” you just have to hope your opponent is dealing with it too and can’t hit either.
I wanted to see what everyone else is doing to mitigate these “bad games” and what sds can do to try and smooth things out for more consistent game play. Sometimes all star is legend speed and sometimes hof is all star, this has to be due to latency I would assume.
I hope there is a fix for this because above all else this is the main issue that makes me get frustrated with the game and question why I even bother. Those smooth games are like the carrot at the end of the stick I’m always wanting. But there are just too many bad connections mixed in at the moment. I’ll champ it out but hoping they look deep into this issue as they are coding 2021.
If all the games ran smooth it makes competing more fair, you can get better having consistent speeds and input results. Making ws would be a breeze for me if all the games ran smooth. Trying to compete against great player and dealing w user input delay on top of it is fairly impossible a task, definitely not fun or enjoyable at all. I have to beat the opponent AND the latency to win.

I live in Ireland the only games I get is delayed swing input

Honestly, I don't know how to mitigate those types of games, they suck and make for a pretty meh experience, I'm in a slump right now too so that doesn't help.
Smoother gameplay in 21 is a must
-
It’s really awful man, and makes me question why I play as well. I wish someone had an answer.
Someone said they reboot their PS4 in another thread so I’m trying that now.
-
It's incredibly frustrating when you can't catch up to a fb on all star, even when you know it's coming. There really isn't much to do but hope you don't get one of those games. They're real mood killers

This is the biggest reason I've avoided online a lot this year. Only recently did I say screw it and start playing again. Mostly because this Event, while terrible, is hilarious fun running out common lineups to grind innings while working towards Prestige with pitchers. The past couple nights I've played have been pretty stable for the most part. During my run in events today I was seeing the ball well, my timing was very good and it was a pretty fun experience.
Then came the three games in a row where Orel's Sinker looked like 150 and I had to sell out to try and time it. If it was an offspeed pitch I was so far out in front I could have swung twice if the game let me.
There's really no way to combat this, either. Like you said, there are still games as the home team where there is so much latency that pitch speeds are just nonsensical. In the Event I literally don't care since I just want to grind Prestige and I'm using common hitters for the most part. But it definitely affects pitching too, so unless I get a super laggy menu check I still play anyway.
My two biggest complaints this year are latency/pitch speeds and pitch accuracy (which was my complaint last year). I don't think it's a stretch to think these two issues might be related too.
Part of me is holding out hope that the game will play better on Xbox. Even on a wired connection my PS4 just doesn't get anywhere close to the speeds or ping I should get with my internet. My ports are forwarded and I've done all the utility stuff I can on my end. It's usually literally half what my Xbox pulls. I'm sure this is just a pipedream, but I'm still hoping there's a noticeable change.
If this game had a stable online experience and we weren't forced to adjust to pitch speeds due to latency or the nonsensical difficulty change in RS, I feel like it would be a much better experience and the frustration would minimize to a degree.
Will it be different next year? I kinda doubt it. But we'll see.

So when I run a speed test on my ps4 it’s saying 60 download and 4 upload - wired but I have 400 meg internet - when I speed test my laptop or my cell phone I’m Pulling well over 400 down and 70 up- is this a glitch in the ps4 speed test or can the unit literally only pull 70 down and 5 up????

I just wish I could make it out of the 4th inning without my pitcher going from pinpoint accuracy to uncontrollably wild.

Good post OP.
A couple of years ago, I was thinking the same as you, after I had just played someone in Korea. The mileage between connections definitely seems to matter...but there is probably more to it, than just the (peer to peer) distance.
I have been hoping SDS could find a solution for this.....as this has been the biggest problem of RS h2h gameplay. What I do not understand, is why Events seem to play so much better than RS h2h and BR, at least from my experiences over the last 3-4 years. Maybe that is just a coincidence... But either way, I also hope that the next gen fixes this, somehow.

I also agree those “bad games” don’t seem to happen in events at all. It’s all ranked.

Now that you mention it... No, they don't.
I just played a game where I knew I was going to lose, I mean I had no chance. He's pitching Greinke and I can barely see his fastball. I ended up bunting, and guessing right and hitting some dingers but he ended up winning in the 10th. Not once was I able to throw a Chapman fastball by him when I brought him in in the 10th, meanwhile Greinke's 93mph fastball was in the glove seemingly before I swung.
It was a good game, close loss, 1 run game, extra inning, but only because I was forced to wear a blindfold and hit with 1 arm while my FB's were neutered to BP speed.

I live in England and the game has always played as described in OP for me. I don’t mean ‘20, I mean MLB the Show, from ‘16 to ‘20. It’s horrific at times, there’s no consistency whatsoever and you have no idea what you’ll be dealing with from one game to the next. From 200mph fastballs on all star, to teleporting pitches and fielders, to not being able to make good input due to the lag, this game is awful online at times and there’s nothing you can do to mitigate it. I have a fast connection, hard wired internet, Kontrol Freeks, a monitor, various pairs of glasses that allegedly enhance your vision, everything, all just for MLB The Show. Sadly - It’s the game, nothing you can do. Bad design for a game that relies on millisecond reactions and precise timing.
-
Here’s a classic example of the issues I encounter in online play daily, through no fault of my own, I might add. Hopefully SDS might realise why we complain if they see enough of this kind of thing.
TLDR; 1st inning, Cobb bunts the ball but hits it straight to 99 Alomar at 2B. He elects to play it barehand, which obviously increases the likelihood of a misplay, but he is an elite defender at his position. He puts his hand up, the ball goes through his hand, through his bat, into his head, presumably deflects off his skull or brain and lands behind him for an infield single. I can’t win when I’m handicapped to this extent. For the record, I do see some shady things happen to my opponents, but never on this scale. It’s reserved for me, it seems.

Been saying this for years. Also been chastised for it for years. Been getting worse but this year is really bad. I think it has more to do with the pandemic and amount of people on the internet with this year being worse. Game needs better matchmaking. I would rather have 5 minutes getting a good connection than instantly finding a game with a bad connection.
-
'20 is end of the line for me because of exactly what OP says he's experienced. I'm playing out this year because I've invested so much time into it thus far, but I'm not falling for this again. My $60 purchase won't be missed since Mlbts will gain revenue from the other consoles, but good luck to those who don't have a Playstation...They're about to find out how it feels to lose games due to connection.

I’ve read some of your posts about ping and they were all very intelligent and made sense.
I feel bad for people who don’t play much, and try out ranked for the first time and end up getting a bad game or a few bad connection games in a row.
I am a fairly competitive person and when you get those [censored] connections, and 93 is 110, it’s like you have to battle your already equally good opponent with a major handicap. I wonder if the opponent experices lag the same as you in a bad game or if it is just one sided.
I have 400 MBs hard wired , fiber internet that moves at the speed of light, and I try to be home game to ensure that I’m hosting. But you still get those bad games no matter what. Comebacklogic being in England with a smaller player base makes me think a lot of the millisecond delays and glitches might be a distance thing. Like if I get someone close to me (I’m in upstate ny) it’s smoother, but if I have to match with someone in Canada or California I have a better chance and experiencing latency induced glitches.
I’ve Also noticed when I speed test my PlayStation it maxes out around 70 down and 6 up, every other device in my house can pull 400/40. Not sure if that is part of the problem and I don’t know how accurate that PlayStation test is but no matter what I tinker with it stays at those rates on the internal test

Spot on post, a few weeks ago during a string of RS games, I had several games in a row where both of us couldn't score much and pitching dominated. Then, one game all of a sudden felt much better and we both scored 10+ runs cause there weren't latency issues. Its crazy how RS plays so much worse than events and it really doesn't make sense to me.

I can tell usually in the first inning whether I am going to win the game or not and it has nothing to do with the opponent. I have mentioned numerous tell tale signs that I look for.
Haven't really looked into the playstation speed test too much. I have gig internet and am usually around 30 down/5 up on the ps. Heard it was capped but I have seen it around 80 up/80 down before but that is very rare.
My connection stuff are just theories since I don't have access to the actual data. I just know there is a serious connection issue somewhere. Could be my connection for all I know. I would like some connection info like pubg and other games have that tell my ping, packet loss and other things. With softball and corporate challenge more than likely being back, I will not purchase next year. I wasn't going to purchase this year but the pandemic changed that.

I always agree with your state of how bad the game is and was getting tired of your connection comments. It all makes sense now...I thought it was just bad relay of input

FFS why do I bother? Third time in a week I get close to 800, then get into a match and can’t see a FB. Literally catching up to everything and scoring 8 runs a game the five before this.
5pm rolls around and boom. Completely different game. People getting off work?
