I’m sure Ty Cobb is on a short list of one the most reviled and despicable human beings to ever live. He allegedly killed a black man for merely looking at his wife. He was a notoriously dirty player that would literally do anything for his benefit and yet he is a part of this game. So if we’re going to hold people to a certain standard off the field then stop putting that reprobate in the game. If not than stop leaving great players out of the game for actions that have zero to do with their actions on the field!!!

A writer's job is to KNOW the game.
A player's job is to PLAY the game. Just because someone played doesn't give them infinite knowledge about the game.In fact, the better the player the worse a judge of others a player would be. The more a player obsessed is with bettering themselves, the less he is watching and evaluating others.
2 anecdotes that utterly disprove your 'ex-players are the best judges of talent' theory:
A. Michael Jordan is by all accounts the best basketball player ever. How's he done with player evaluation in his stint with the hornets?
B. The only recent MLB GM of the Year to have actual playing experience was Billy Beane. Every other GMOY this decade was someone who never made the majors.

what you've stated has never been proven as truth-yes ty was a douche but nothing has ever been truly proven of what you said but because youre a "writer" its truth. ty was a douche but no he never killed a black man kid. writers can say what they will and most dont bother to check or know facts.

You in fact omitted the fact that I said allegedly in my post. I never said what Ty Cobb did was fact, hence the term allegedly because he was never convicted of said offense. So again you choose to omit the key to post to attack someone for their post. In debate terms it’s called a false premise and that’s what your basing your skewed argument on is a false premise. This is a great post and the replies have been just as enjoyable to read through. I feel like there is some gray area around the whole PED era. There are those that have the stigma attached to them and then there are those who have kinda flew under the radar. We have Giambi, Cano and feel like players like Palimero, Andy Pettite are some that can also fly under the radar in the future. And then those big names Clemens McGwire Sosa and Bonds that will never be able to disassociate their names from steroids. bonds never needed peds, he saw how it pumped others up who werent even close to his skill and he figured why not man, they aint getting caught/busted/spit on, they getting paid- i wouldve done the same had I bonds' talent been in me. bonds NEVER needed peds, he just showed everyone what the best will do with enhancements- bonds is the greatest player that ever lived. i didnt see ruth play, i saw bonds- bonds took the pirates to the pirates to the playoffs 3 years in a row way before peds. bonilla was there but he left before '92 season and lo and behold bonds got 'em there again. in '93 bonds went to the giants, they won 103 games and missed the playoffs- the giants werent good before bonds and did little but get bonds in the offseason, mlb restructured the playoff format because the giants won 103 games and didnt go to the playoffs because atlanta had 104 wins, the phillies had less and beat atlanta, giants shouldve beat dodgers in last game yada yada, barry bonds who is who you should/would/will always start a new baseball team with, if you have barry your chances of not losing are small. you kids love mike trout- trout hasnt/doesnt take his team to the playoffs, barry did- barry bonds is better than any player playing today. trout has numbers but tout doesnt inspire a team to win even with joe maddon this year. barry made you believe, trout doesnt, be quiet anyone who thinks trout is better than barry. barry was better than ruth and aaron(aaron is clearly the second best player behind bonds, ruth had gehrig and many others= bonds and aaron had themselves and inspired scrubs to win(aaron had eddie mathews, bonds had jeff kent other than that go to sports reference and try to wrap your head around the truth/numbers.
