Yu Darvish has been a problem for the developers of MLB The Show for the duration of his time in Major League Baseball. Simply put, the problem is that Darvish has eight legitimate pitches in his repertoire, while the in-game maximum for any pitcher is five.

I think that in general there should be an option for a sixth pitch, with it being something in RttS which is difficult to acquire. Perhaps make it available only after a certain overall level for each of the first five pitches.

Anyway, while I doubt that SDS will ever enable full repertoires for pitchers like Darvish and Despagne (another current pitcher with eight different pitches in his repertoire), perhaps there's a way to meet the players halfway. When bringing in a pitcher with such a wide array of pitches, perhaps the game could give players the choice of setting which 5 (or 6, ideally) will be available to the pitcher during this particular appearance. The menu would be known to both sides and the pitchers who have worked so hard to increase their arsenals would be represented much more accurately than they are now.

As for the idea for a sixth pitch being available for any pitcher, I think that it's pretty simple in terms of selection, which seems to be one of the factors limiting us to five total pitch types, that being that there are only five main buttons free. There are several ways to address this:

    • Pitch 1: X, Pitch 2: O, Pitch 3: △, Pitch 4: □, Pitch 5: R1, Pitch 6: R3, re-map batter's eye to L3

    • L2 or R2 (hold) to select pitch, Pitch 1: LS Up, Pitch 2: LS Right, Pitch 3: LS Down, Pitch 4: LS Left, Pitch 5: LS Up/Right (45°), Pitch 6: Down/Right (135°), Pitch 7: Down/Left (225°), Pitch 8: Up/Left (315°)

I'm sure that others have ideas on this as well. The point I'm making is that I don't believe that the idea of enabling more than five pitches for some pitchers should be blocked by controller issues.

    What do you think?
