Gameplay settings question

Why do settings "stick" sometimes and other times you have to constantly change them? As an example I was doing a moment to get a HR on veteran, so I changed hitting to directional. But now it doesn't matter if I play vs cpu on rookie (stat grind) or the even on all-star in an event game, I have to continuously go back in to settings and change it back to zone.
I know I can go all the way back out to change my settings permanently but why should I have to if I was always on zone but that one-time change to directional is now set as the new default. Why doesn't it then go back to zone after changing it back dozens of times now?

Moments and other missions lock your changes. Playing actual games will not.
