A solution to the entire market problems
-
There is absolutely nothing about computer software that mimics the actions of an actual financial market, particularly commodity trading. This is why when SDS created this so-called community market it was a serious strategic mistake, one that video game companies have fallen in love with.
Here's the problem. SDS controls the market and so automatically it puts them in position of being suspect in anything that happens that is strange or manipulative. SDS can certainly release as many cards or as few cards as they like. There is no limit to the supply and therefore no science behind the value.
The solution to this whole affair is simple and SDS was foolish to not adopt it.
Every single action in the game that would earn a card is replaced by a system where specific cards are not the rewards, but instead players earn a threshold. Meaning, what the player earns is the free opportunity to choose from every single card of a given type and attribute level. There is no market, there is no trade opportunity. The same system would be in place for equipment. You earn a diamond equipment type and can select from any of the diamond level equipment in the game. But, no trades and no sell or buy.
In other words, the ONLY method to earn cards and equipment is via quality of play. There is no market at all. But, players are not locked into earning just one specific card or equipment. You earn a pick level, and all cards and equipment equal to that level are presented to you in a menu and you pick the one you want and it's yours forever.

Yeah I don’t know, some interesting thoughts. People do enjoy playing the market and collecting cards. Something about landing a card in a pack gives that dopamine hit that we all like. When it happens.
I doubt they could realistically axe the entire market. I think that’d tick a lot of people off but who knows
-
Interesting thoughts but it would be the final nail in the coffin. Ultimate team modes are built with a marketplace.
-
Interesting enough, on every card this morning that had good flipping margins...within 10 minutes of good action a "random" sell bid comes along and absolutely nukes the margin by listing it barely above the buy bids. It's happened on four separate items this morning so far
-
A simple fix would be to make every card purchased from the market, non-sellable. Only cards earned through play can be sold. If you buy a card from the market, great, collect it, but you can't sell it.

Folks, this is why the stock market strictly limits the number of people who have direct access to trading systems, and also why those few who do are tightly regulated and strictly tracked. Can one imagine the degree of harm caused by bots getting into a stock market trading system and causing the kind of havoc the customer base sees happening with the MLB The Show community market?
I applaud SDS for trying to form a strategy to throttle the volume of trades to defeat the bots. I really thought that might work, but it seems I underestimated the sophistication of the bots being used. That's sad, but seeing the evidence that it only remained effective for a few days is exactly why I think the solution is to nuke the community market, and replace it with a system that lets customers choose the exact reward they receive, commensurate with the level of reward they earned during game play.
I think I understand the attraction SDS and other companies have for markets that allow trading. But, I think all these companies underestimated the degree of dishonesty and the sophistication of these bots and other means to deny the customers a fair environment.

@CoachPappy17_PSN wouldn’t this severely limit the market. And basically kill off collections.

I don’t mean to be crass but how would they make money by doing this

Well, they could just offer up all items (cards and equipment) for fixed prices in stubs. Operate just like any mom and pop store online. The bots leverage the trade option, the ability for vast numbers of people to set sell and buy prices. I guess if SDS's motivation is entirely about enticing people to spend hard money for stubs, this option would preserve that option.

@PriorFir4383355_XBL interesting - would love to see how something like that went down with the community tho lol

If you mean the current buy price is barely above the sell price and it crushes the margin? I just buy it and list for a profit. It has never hurt me and you'd be surprised how often it immediately sells at a win.

@SQT18_XBL That's what I've done. "Set it and forget it"

The stock market is literally run by bots, AI, and algorithms. And they have caused this kind of havoc.

It would be a mass exodus, or the forums would blow up like they did Friday with pitchforks
No way they could so something like that in the middle of this release. Maybe in a new game but I think you’d have more people riled up than already are

It would definitely limit the market, but IMO this is a baseball game and not Economics 101. The bots and card flippers force us to use a manipulated market so I am not worried about that.
I don't think it would hurt collections at all. I have finished all my collections and haven't flipped a single card. I have sold every duplicate card I earned. I did pull Ohtani, but by now most grinders have opened enough packs that they should have pulled Ohtani or Judge.

@CoachPappy17_PSN how would it not affect collections if you made every card sellable only once. You would have to choose between selling that card and collecting. And while it is a baseball game some people are heavily into the market to be able to invest and flip to make stubs that they will need for new cards.
