PS5 freezes and won't restart

Hey everyone,
I haven't seen this particular bug mentioned, but it's happened to me at least 3 times. A few times, I've been playing in DD (it's happened in conquest and moments and perhaps even mini seasons) where the PS5 will lock up completely, and then the system shuts down. But that's not even the weird part. After it shuts down, I can't even restart the PS5 using the controller or by pressing the power button. I have to unplug it for a few seconds and plug it back in. After that, it works fine. Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone know of a possible solution?
To me, this sounds like a problem with the machine, but I'm 95% certain it's the game. I watch a lot of movies on the PS5, and this never happened when using the BD player. Also, it hasn't happened whilst playing any other games. Finally, I have spent the majority of my gaming time in RttS, and I haven't had any issues there. But it has happened 3 or maybe even 4 times in DD. I don't play online, so I can't say for sure if it would freeze up there. I haven't played franchise, storylines, retro (lol) or any other game modes yet.
I think I might try uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Hopefully that works. But if anyone else has run into this, please let me know!

This sounds like a common issue older PS5s have, and unfortunately, there’s no easy fix. Mine did this about 2 years ago and fortunately I was able to trade it in at GameStop and get a brand new one for about $100. My buddy just did this and cost him about $300 since trade value has dropped. You can also try and send it to Sony to repair, but you pay shipping and I believe a minimum of $50 repair cost.
Sorry to bring bad news, hopefully I’m wrong, but sounds exactly like the issues I had with it a couple years ago.

Ugh, that would be a bummer. Hopefully that's not it. But thank you for letting me know! I think the PS5 is only like a year and a half old or something like that. Maybe 2.5 years. But it's really not all that old.

@SchnauzerFace_MLBTS if it is a first gen ps5 very easily could be an issue and sign of wear. I had a first gen ps5 and it just started randomly turning off mid game before the end of 25 but was having freezing problems before that. Luckily girlfriend bought me a new one before 26 came out on Valentine’s Day all I can recommend which is what I had to do with my old one is a deep clean would be worth a shot.

If you are out of warranty I would suggest reading/watching how to do a simple clean on your ps5 with canned air and a toothbrush. There are also folks out there who repair PS5s that are overheating. Would be a lot cheaper than helping GameStop rip you off.

You can try some of the cleaning suggestions, that might help for a bit, but the core of the issue is the overheating. The first generations didn't handle the heat so well, it was something they fixed in the second generation and pro. Sony should’ve had some sort of repair warranty extension, but chose not to obviously.

I bought it in Nov. 2023. I think it's one of the slim models. Is that still a first gen? Sorry, I don't know much about these things. But I did watch a couple videos on how to clean them, and I think I can probably give that a whirl tomorrow. Hopefully it's just an issue of dust or dog hair that's clogging up the fan or something. I've got a shed-happy pug, so maybe that's the problem. I run the robot-vacuum every day, but it can't keep up. She's more hair than dog.

A deep clean will fix it, it happened to me and the power supply vents were clogged, it could also need liquid metal.
Take it to somebody who can do it.

@SchnauzerFace_MLBTS Have you taken apart your PS5 and cleaned the dust from the fan and vents inside? Mine was doing this from overheating, cleaning out the PS5 usually fixes it. There’s videos on YouTube and it’s not that difficult.

If you have a UBREAKIFIX nearby they should be able to fix this. Happened to me a few years back. Deep clean and they added heat glue or something. I was without the ps5 for a few days but has worked perfectly ever since.
