Best Fielders At Each Position
-
The discourse around the Ozzie card getting shafted on fielding had me thinking...
Who do y'all feel are the best fielders at each position all time?I think the two obvious ones are
3B Brooks Robinson
SS OzzieWith 1B probably going to Keith Hernandez (although Big Cat Andres Gallaraga deserves some love there as do some others I'm not thinking of off the top of my head).
Who is the #1 in CF defense ONLY? What about 2B?
Thoughts at each position?? -
I mean the easiest thing would be to go off most Gold Gloves at those positions
Pitcher: Greg Maddux, 18
Catcher: Ivan Rodriguez, 13
First base: Keith Hernandez, 11
Second base: Roberto Alomar, 10
Third base: Brooks Robinson, 16
Shortstop: Ozzie Smith, 13
Outfield: Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente, 12
Left field: Alex Gordon, 8
Center field: Kevin Kiermaier, 4
Right field: Mookie Betts, 6 -
Tried to leave my post at readable length, but here's my thoughts...
P G. Maddux
C Pudge Rodriguez
1B Keith Hernandez
2B R. Alomar always amazed me but I'm sure there's plenty of others historically
3B B. Robinson
SS The Wiz
LF Taz maybe but I'm sure I'm missing someone obvious.
CF Griffey Jr with a Kiermeier honorable mention
RF Clemente -
@Dolenz_PSN wow. I actually didn't even look at those but I was pretty close.
I'm just curious about opinions though.im sure there's some that deserve more love than they got from gold gloves

CF is Jones, RF is Clemente
2B, 3B, and SS are all in the moonshot 2.0 program
C is Pudge, but Molina deserves a mention
1B I guess is HernandezAs for LF? It would be the third Pirate on the list. People forget just how good Bonds was pre steroids.

Expect for game 7 of the ‘92 NLCS.

I'll take Rey Ordonez at SS, although not in the game. Just saw him at the Mets 'Alumni Classic' game at Citi Field. He looks so different today!!
Keith or Olerud at first. -

Keith or Olerud at first. The 1999 Mets infield might be the best defensive infield of all time, its certainly the best in the last 40 years
Olerud, Alfonso, Ordenez, and Ventura
Olerud would go on to win 3 out of 4 gold gloves after leaving the Mets, but JT Snow winning 4 straight Gold Gloves, 3 of which should have been Olerud, is one of the more questionable thing awards voters have ever done
Ordonez and Venture did win Gold gloves, and Alfonso was the 'weak' link...with a 1.2 dWAR
