Would it make sense for SDS to separate consoles?
-
I'm sure finances have a say in this. But separate next gen with previous gen consoles , that way they still sell copies for the previous gen but next gen gets a better improved product .

I really don't know why this persistent non-sequitur keeps materializing. This is well known truth. SDS has written entirely different code for the legacy and modern gaming consoles, and even the code among the various modern consoles must be different to handle each system.
Yet, this false claim of "either or" keeps getting asserted.
Folks, again, nothing in the support for legacy systems holds back the modern console versions unless SDS chooses those compromises for reasons having nothing to do with the various consoles.
Moreover, MLB has written into their contract with SDS the continued support for the legacy consoles and until that reality changes, SDS supporting both generations will continue.

Where did you gather this information? I've played this game for many years and have done a very small amount of video game coding myself, and I can tell you with extreme confidence that it's the same code with minor tweaks. You can't rewrite game code like this in 9 months.
I can agree that the next-gen-only logic is silly; however, this game is absolutely being held back because SDS forced cross-play, and the visuals have to be able to run efficiently on the older consoles; hence, the visuals continue to look the same.

I don't know about the Show, all I know in this regard is how EA did it's NHL series when both generations were still in play. Basically both games use the "Legacy" code as the skeleton and base for each game. Everything on top of that is generation based. The issue is that the Legacy code being used in the current gen, being the backbone, does place a certain amount of limitation on the newer hardware/software. This is usually most noticeable in the graphic department, and certain other aspects like processing time et al.
Again, that's how it worked with EA when they were still cross-gen. I can't be certain with MLBTS or how SDS did it.

Does SDS force it or does the MLB force it as a condition of the MLB license?

@Dolenz_PSN cross play is basically industry standard now; any game that doesn’t offer it is behind the times and we’d hear the chorus of why nots.

It may very well be a clause in the contract; however, what I meant was that they could have enabled cross-play to work only between PS5 and Series X and separated the previous-generation consoles.
