MLBTS 23 wins best sports game of the year!

@LuvMyXBOX Ngl I don't agree with it

Negro Leagues mode also won an award for 'best win' :
https://www.operationsports.com/biggest-win-in-2023-negro-leagues-storylines-in-mlb-the-show-23/Honestly agree with this part, I thought it was incredible and I loved every minute of it. Sadly it made up far too little of the content this year.

A. It's not like there was much competition. FC/NFL/NHL are horrible, PGA & WWE are too niche & no one votes for arcade games like WildCard or SMB4. So you're left w/ MLB or NBA— which is getting (rightfully) criticized for turning their online modes into a casino.
B. I think MLB 23 was ok, but them winning is emblematic of how pathetic sports games have become. They know 20-100k players will pre-order before a cover star is even announced and put their effort on whaling them out further. MLB just happens to be the one with the least gamebreaking bugs and most rewarding for F2P players.
C. Negro Leagues was a good mode, hope they build on it. Add more players, usable teams, maybe women as well!

All you have to do is go onto Metacritic and see what users rate these games. Not critics but users. The only sports games the guy above me named with good ratings are MLB The Show and EA Sports PGA Tour.
-
I liked it

I trust users on Metacritic, good or bad, far less than I trust actual game reviewers.
I mean look at this stellar, well-written 0 star review.
anyone who rates a sports game that came out in the past 5 years higher than a 3 needs mental help
That's the whole review.
So, no, I won't look blindly at some aggregate user score to judge a game.
-
Gameplay wise 23 has been the biggest step up since 17.
DD was ok. Best DD was 21.

You clearly went and found one so I’m sure you can weed out the garbage. Kind of like avoiding your 100 posts whining about Goldy.

It doesn't matter where you look, this is the general consensus from all the online playerbases. I get every year can't be like 2005, but every major sports game release shouldn't feel like a step back.
But it doesn't matter— they make a profit just releasing the game so there isn't much of an incentive to get better

@AfterShockGamer
They break even or take a loss to sell a game like MLB The Show. They make money off of the micro-transaction. People can complain about them, but they are one of the major reasons why games cost $70 and not $120. In 1988 Nintendo games were upwards of $50 to put things into perspective.
-
@SevisonJN any source to back up the statement that they break even or take a loss on the game?
If that be the case then it could make financial sense for them to consider de-annualising the release of new games and instead focus on strategies to keep the current game fresh.

Hey, I am still kind of shocked that none of the 2022 season award winners actually got an award card for it in this year's game.
-
Competition isnt there. NCAA Football coming out this summer. Lets see what happens.
-
This was my least favorite year since 2018
-
2023 was the best game so far for a simulated game of baseball with the correct Slider settings. I hope it contines for 2024, you can keep the casual DD stuff but keep improving the core simulated aspect of the game.

This game won’t matter anymore than Madden matters. Especially now that they can’t “copy” real life players anymore. How many real players will sign their likeness over for $500 if that’s still the amount? All the nobodies will be real and starting players made up fake players. It’ll impact it more than you think not having the major NCAA players all over that game or the ability to make them.
-
@fubar2k7 Guys will be jumping to have their likeness in a video game. Are you kidding me? 90% of these guys will be out of football completely when they graduate. This is an amazing opportunity for them. And of course the stars will be in as it will help grow their brand. I think you will be surprised.
-
@ChuckCLC_PSN Not for $500 they won’t. Arch Manning made $3.8 million off likeness in NIL money. He isn’t a stupid person.
-
@fubar2k7
@ChuckCLC_PSN also talks about expanding his their brands. That would be the smartest move for most high profile players. In the draft, if I'm between two players that are similar, that branding could easily make me choose one over the other.
Yes, Ohtani was sought after by everyone, but he is worth over 700M because the Japanese public and businesses will pay it over the next ten years because of his brand. The Angels might as well have been called the Japanese national team the past three years.

I didn’t say they won’t do it. I said they won’t for $500. Ohtani didn’t sign for the $20 million they’ll pay over the next 10 years. He signed for the $700 million you referenced. The no name kids might do it for $500 but the stars will never take just $500.
Doesn’t matter either way. The same people who make the worst NFL game ever are making this. What makes anyone think it’ll be any better?
