I take one leadoff step. If I take two, the pitcher usually throws over. While holding R2, the runner will stand up and then settle back into a crouch. Once he does that, I let go of R2. Hopefully, this helps.

I did some research before posting and have been using the old hold r2 n L2 after he looks over his shoulder. I can normally only take one extra step without a pick off attempt. 97% of the time after letting go of L2 immediately after he begins the wind up im tagged out still. Am I doing it wrong or is it normally this difficult???

I don't take any steps. Press L2, hit L1 then R1, as soon as pitcher lifts his foot I spam the L1 button till the screen changes, and always hit right on the right stick so I slide on the RF side of 2nd.
haven't tried with less than 85 spd, and go on 2-0 counts. I always check the catchers arm and for pop time. I've only been thrown out a few times( always pop time or high arm str).
    This is cpu strategy only.

This is exactly the way to do it

I think it also depends on the catcher. Pudge Rodriguez and Salvador Perez are nails!!

Captain Kirk too. I think he has the pop quirk.

Edit: I just checked and he doesn't, so never mind. He had it last year, so I thought they'd give it to him this year too.

If I get a runner on, I’m sending him. I bet my CS rate is 95% lol. While it’s cool having SB with Rowdy Tellez and Daniel Vogelbach, I’m sure I’d much rather have the billion or so runs back that I’ve lost as a result

Dont hit anything R related lol. That makes the guy return. I dont steal vs another player often, but vs CPU it is easy as heck. I hit L2 right away, hit L2 again once he is set, then hit L1 once he starts his motion. No issues.

I wish I knew the answer to that. I've been playing this game for over a decade and have yet to figure this out. It seems totally random. ....and I hate that slip and slide dance my baserunner performs before finally heading to 2nd. smh
