Did/do you collect baseball cards?
-
I got back into cards in 2017 because of this game, wanting something tangible for my money other than "fake" digital cards that they take away every year. I went after Bellinger, Judge, Ohtani, Soto, Tatis, Guerrero, Bichette. When the pandemic hit and cards exploded, I had a blast buyng and selling. I stopped buying cards last year as the odds seemed to be getting worse and it felt like the disaster of the late 80s, early 90s all over again what with overprinting. I have a great collection that I still pull out and go through every so often. I will hold onto what I have with the hopes a grandkid gets interested someday and I can blow their minds

I’m 35, I collected baseball and hockey cards mostly. Had some gems but mostly just of my favorite Philly teams so nothing mind blowing. I wanted to get back into cards like last year but I honestly think the money isn’t worth it. Now you got nerds going to the stores and weighing the packs to try and find the autographed patch cards and stuff. It already seems like it’s too hardo already now that people do unboxing vids and all. I’d love to get a Harper Philly autograph card for my personal collection I’ve day but I doubt I will ever pay for it what people want.

I didn’t mention this in my OP but I passed my collection on to my nephew last night. I haven’t looked at a price guide since I stopped collecting all those years ago but I do remember the prices falling however that never mattered to me because I never would turn loose of my cards for money…not that they were worth anything anyways. I can still remember when my Uncle passed his collection to me when I was around 7 and can distinctly remember having a Mickey Mantle in my bike spokes, along with several others…haha he cursed about that all the way up until he passed away years ago! I waited until my nephew was 17 to present mine to him in the hopes he doesn’t do that with my old 1984 Olympic team set haha

Yes I certainly feel ya! That’s crazy about people weighing their packs I’ve never heard any such thing lol! There was a guy in my hometown who had a card shop back when I was younger who would sell packs of ‘unopened’ cards from past years…he had a partner that he double crossed and it wasn’t long after that he went to the local paper to let everyone know the guy had been using a steam iron (or something or similar) to open the packs and remove the best cards. What a dirt bag huh?
First thing I did every year as a kid was trade around until I had my complete Mets team and once I did that I didn’t worry about the other stuff. You mentioned the Phillies - I remember thinking Chris James, Ricky Jordan, Bruce Ruffin, and Ron Jones we’re all going to be Hall of Famers…at least judging by the amount of cards I had of each of them!

Love this.
Mid 40s here and yeah, collected tons. Still have them in the garage. I still buy packs from time to time just for the nostalgia but I'm not looking for anything particular unless I happen to get somebody on my Oakland A's.
Who were some other favorites that weren't superstars but not on your team either? I was always a big Gregg Jefferies fan. Also liked Travis Fryman, Chip Hale, Turner Ward all as rookies.
When I liked someone's rookie card and they did well I was CONVINCED I would be a great scout because of that. -
I had a decent collection but not great but I lost it to a flood when I was in college. I moved my things into the basement so my bedroom could be converted into my dads home office and they didn’t survive a flood during my Sophomore year at UConn.

Now we’re cooking…those Phillies I mentioned would be some examples as I’m a Met and loathe the Phillies! I watched Gregg Jeffries play just yesterday! Remember what a sensation he was and all the hype that was generated when SI did that article highlighting his incredible work ethic regarding his baseball training/preparations? I remember my buddies would be begging me to trade off some of my hoard (believe it was 89 Score card I’m thinking of now) because the price for the card lol
Hey speaking of the A’s and rookies….I had three back to back pages of the 87 Topps Canseco and the 87 Topps McGwire each…I loved how green those cards were to this day it’s still my favorite look of the As and what a splash those two made huh!
Edit: I should explain how I saw Jeffries play yesterday lol…I watched the Mets bs Cubs from Sept 8, 1988 to relive Hojo’s great 5 hit game

That’s an absolute tragedy man…I hate that. I had something similar happen to me as a kid but it was all of my Star Wars, Gi Joes, etc that were swept away however I had the cards in the top of the closet. We’ve ultimately ended up in the same boat now though because after last night I’ve not got any cards left either!

Yes can you believe it? He was holding them like they were a great treasure and I can’t help but smile over it still today! Hey I had several pages full of Will Clark and Mark Grace that we looked at and (to my shame) I even had a page of Mackey Sasser lol.
Do you remember Ralph Bryant with the Dodgers? I was just positive he was going to be something huge haha I believe he did go over to Japan? Anyhow I forgot until I saw two pages of that completely smoked up looking 1987 Donruss of his haha

They’re on good hands. You didn’t lose them as much as passed them on. You’re a good man.
I do remember him. But nobody beats Billy Ashley for me. When I was 15 I thought the Dodgers got the greatest player in the universe. I wonder why I’m not a scout.
