I don’t think you’re in the minority at all. These seem to be common complaints this year. I do appreciate that SDS is trying to mix things up, but they are absolutely mixing up the wrong things. No one has ever complained that the players’ names are too real. Such a weird choice. If I’m not mistaken, this will be the last year with Topps cards, so we all might as well get used to more of this next year. I kinda like the Kaiju card art, but the Incognito artwork and concept is a big miss for me. Also, is there a difference between Alter Ego and Incognito? There’s almost too much content this year, and it just feels very disorganized and structureless.
I knew fanatics was taking over the mlb licensing for cards and I wonder if that’s the end of topps now too. I forgot all about alter ego. It does all just mesh together at this point. Idk where they got the names either. As a Phillies fan I’ve heard Castellanos called a lot of things but never Nicky two bags lol

Fanatics got the rights, but shortly after that they also bought Topps.

Next year, instead of completing PXP missions to earn Topps Now cards, you will have to win a Mortal Kombat-style fight with a kaiju. If you defeat the monster, you earn a giant Mothra egg, which you must protect from monsters and enemy teams. Once the egg hatches, you will be required to raise it, teach it to hunt, and train it in a combination of Aikido and Shaolin Kunf Fu fighting styles. Once your kaiju reaches maturity, a prophecy will be revealed and you and your hatchling must undertake a quest to retrieve 3 ancient amulets that have been hidden in the dark world known as Yojimbo. Whilst in this parallel dimension, you’ll be required to reach base twice and drive in 1 run. Then, and only then, will the next card be unlocked. Pretty much your typical baseball stuff, tbh.

You deserve a player of the month card for that post

I kinda like the Kaiju card art, to be honest, but the Charisma and Incognito artwork are big misses for me. On a slight tangent — is there a difference between Alter Ego and Incognito? Or is that just the name of the pack? There’s almost too much content this year, and it just feels very disorganized and structureless.
Don't want to assume; because you know what happens when people assume.
But I will say that with Fanatics buying Topps; they would be stupid to still not sure the name 'Topps'.
I could see 'Topps' with by Fanatics in small print.
But like the other OP stated; I'm pretty sure Fanatics bought the rights to manufacturer the cards and Topps could still make them, but wouldn't be allowed to use team logos or names (like how Panini and Donruss are doing).
But Topps thought it would be better to just sell the company to Fanatics so they could still produce cards with logos and team names.

Add in a cute fuzzy bunny and you have a great Monty python script.

The content is lazy. The amount of cards is good, it’s the planning of if that’s lazy.
Very little thought was put into the use of Captains, the longevity of this game, releasing multiple cards of the same player in the same set, paralleling cards is basically pointless now, programs are a waste of time when they’re giving low 90s cards in them… that’s just the issues off the top of my head. I’m sure there’s more if I thought about it more.

It's posts like this that make you a king, great post lol

I'd have liked to seen this year's game without the high diamonds from day one. I think it might have been pretty great (well, if we ignore the obvious lurch towards monetization).
Programs like the Mexico series, Incognito, Charisma, etc. would have yielded great rewards instead of more filler in the binder to be used only for collections.
Captains were a great idea but they were largely obsolete because of the 97+ cards available immediately. If there were a normal power curve those captain boosts would have been terrific in the early game.
Kudos for trying something new, but it seems the planning and execution has been half-***ed and as such we're left with a game that feels like a slog, an endless grind for that one good card (collection). In that way it seems very '18 Immortal-ish (minus the bobbleheads, thankfully).
Edit - Oh, and the Incognito names being in game instead of just on the card is super cringe and I hope they reverse that decision.
-
The grinding seems so pointless but for some reason I find myself wanting to get these cards that I’ll probably never use.
Like this new incognito program.. probably never going to use that 97 belt in my main online lineup since that 99 big papi will eventually be obtainable.
Only reason I’m trying to complete it is for collections I guess?
I honestly don’t even play ranked as much anymore. I’ve just been playing event games.. the 3 innings and requirements is enjoyable.
Can’t even imagine what ranked is like right now with all these 99 cards.
Guarantee the first game I play ranked I’ll face a person with every 99 possible. Screw that
-
As has been mentioned, I like the idea of Captains. Just remove any/all negative numbers subtracted from them. Also, get rid of having to level a card up before they activate.
Basically, make them all like the Hoffman Captain. Which I still use in my pen even today.
