Stealing while pitcher is throwing - how?

I'm on PS5 and for the life of me I can't figure out how to send a runner to steal from first to second when the pitcher is delivering. I can sometimes get a runner to go with the pitcher holding the ball (stupid and an instant out) but that's it. It shows "L2" but there's just something I'm missing. I must be an idot...

Don't take a lead when on first base. Squeeze L2 once then when you want your runner to go while the pitcher starts his windup, press L1 and your runner will go. Play around with this and sometimes you can hold L1 and start him a little early and sometimes you will get picked off but that is how you get your runner to go early.

it makes it easier to get picked up but on xbox hold L1 and release the second the pitcher starts motion and if you get used to it you get way better jump
