Vision explained?

It determines the size of your outer PCI, if I’m not mistaken.

I looked online and couldn't get a good explanation of how vision works in 23. I know in the past, it affected the outer pci for foul tips. Is it the same this year?
I read somewhere that it affects the timing window?
I'm struggling a bit on HOF so curious if vision is a worthwhile attribute to focus on when creating lineups for the higher difficulty in ranked.
Vision plays a role in timing windows, some cards with great contact and power may look great but could have lower vision that can hurt there timing

interesting, I imagine this becomes more important in higher difficulties.

Classic example is 99 Tatis. I picked him up, card looks great on the face but 78 vision .....I find it hard to square balls up with him. When I do, he's a beast but he's a shade under, or on top of.....

When I first tried to surf, I bought this smaller, very sleek surf board. I thought it looked cool and would help me do tricks. However, I had no experience surfing on a board and was not that good. Unless you are a very skilled surfer, the bigger surf board will more likely give you better results. So, in relation to this game, the Vision attribute is like a surf board.

I guess so......but in your metaphor a smaller sleeker surfboard would give an experienced surfer better results. I don't think a card with lower vision would give an experienced player better results...I think that card would be better for anyone at any skill level

I don't think a card with lower vision would give an experienced player better results.Maybe not, but there are some posts regarding experienced, or high skilled, players avoiding high vision cards due to the PCI being "too big". It may have something to do with lower Vision cards not fouling off as many pitches and being more rewarded for good PCI accuracy... ie Joey Gallo.

Can you direct me to one of these posts? I never saw anything of this nature from truly top end players

@NYGxNYMxFan68_XBLHere are a few, some are old but still somewhat relevant though.

It is quite overrated. The only part of the PCI that actually matters is affected by contract ratings and pitchers per 9s
Vision is completely useless this year imo. Sometime I even swing and miss with the ball all the way in the outer vision circle with good timing. Makes no sense

"In some cases, a high vision can be a hindrance. In my experience, the vast majority of contact that's made outside of the inner Contact PCI but within the outer Vision PCI is going to be an easy pop up. If a card has low vision, you're more likely to just swing through those and take the strike rather than the out."
"The further out towards the edge of the vision ring you go, the lower the % chance of quality contact results. The inner (contact) ring is where you are most likely to make good contact (higher exit velo). Vision which is the outer ring, is a better reflection of the outer most limit of where your player could potentially make contact with the ball, although it comes with a higher % chance of a poor contact result and lower exit velo."
"(hidden) comment is spot on. A high vision guy can be good if you really want to get a ball in play late in a game, but the way the game plays as a general rule high contact is the choice over high vision.
This is exactly why Joey Gallo has been a MLB The Show legend while always being blind as a ground dwelling rodent."

"It can also work against you, with less than 2 strikes there are plenty of swings you take where you'd rather not put the ball in play, but you end up chopping or popping out."... ..."A really good player may prefer lower vision because they are so good at placing their PCI that they'd rather swing and miss than make weak contact."

I noticed that the swing timing graphic is smaller for my low vision players. For example, the higher vision players seem to have more green/yellow/red area. Is this a direct correlation to vision? Also, I don't believe it has anything to do with contact ratings or clutch as a comparison I'm using is Sosa (low vision) and Chipper (high vision) there contact and clutch is appx the same.

I believe they revamped how vision works along with clutch for this year. Not 100 though.

Yep, Clutch is definately more relevant now.... They may have added the timing aspect to Vision in 2020 or 2021? It used to just be the outer PCI size, so the improved timing windows make higher Vision cards more useful.
-
I think 20 was the first year of outer PCI; previously it was one PCI and the size was a combination of contract and vision

This is a super thread, thanks!

These aren't really relevant posts anymore and honestly it's not like any of these come from guys like Skepple, College Lefty, etc....I would give this more credence if it came from a top player
