The tip is to get the pitcher to tire faster which usually results in easier pitches to hit. It also helps you time up the release and see the different breaks on pitches.

If you take more pitches you’ll get more in the zone. No one wants to walk every batter. If someone I’m playing is chasing constantly they will see far much worse pitches than if I’m playing someone I know is going to be more selective I feel as though I have to at least throw it close to the zone or they’ll take it

Does it matter in real baseball what the count is before a hitter is “rewarded”?

If this is a simulation game and players praise that...if I square up the first pitch should it be nerfed because I didn’t take a certain amount of pitches?

I believe the more you get the pitch count up and in turn drop him stamina your PCI grows slightly as he drains

Yes, after 4 balls you are rewarded with a walk. Pretty simple concept.

What about a pitch right down the middle? Am I supposed to let it go if it’s the first pitch of an AB?

You know, to “work the count”.

Joe Maeur would every single pitch of his entire career.. Source: his gramps

Go with "feel". I sometimes take 1st pitch middle, sometimes swing. with mixed results on both. I always take the 1st pitch from a RP no matter what, just to see what he has and how it comes in.

The whole point of taking pitches is to get a pitch down the middle, or the pitch that you’re looking for. Just because it’s a strike doesn’t mean it’s a good pitch to hit. If I’m sitting up and in and I get a low and away changeup, unless it’s a two strike count, I’m taking it. Or if it’s the first pitch of the AB and I get that high heater you bet I’m swinging. Here are a few things taking pitches does for you both in the game and IRL..

    1. Pitch recognition. Seeing a pitch multiple times it becomes easier to hit.
    2. Figuring out a pitcher’s tendencies.
    3. Wearing down a pitcher
    4. Waiting for a pitch down the middle or the pitch you are looking for.
    5. Drawing a walk

So in all seriousness, logic behind it is:

    1. more likely to be in more favorable counts
    2. dont swing yourself out of at bat/bail the pitcher out and pop or ground out bad pitches
    3. wear down a dominant pitcher faster, more likely to see meatballs/weaker bullpen

Theres probably more but these are top 3 that came to mind

Pitchers are far more likely to throw at the edges of the zone early in the count. Those are more often a "ball"....and often difficult to square up. Once you get a pitcher into a situation when starts thinking about a "walk", he aims more for the heart of the plate, giving you a better pitch to hit.

Some pitchers try to sneak a meatball by early in the count in order to keep from getting into a situation in which they are behind in the count later. That is a particular target for some aggressive hitters.

Every at bat is different obviously.....but generally, if you leave borderline pitches alone early in the count, odds are, you will get something easier to hit as the pitcher loses his room for error.

The best pitchers wont be manipulated by this idea, but most pitchers just arent good enough to paint corners every time they need a "strike"..... The idea is to put them in the position to need a "strike".

Lots of good info on here. Hope i added something.

    Good luck.

The more pitches you see, the more chances you have at seeing a good pitch to hit. Simple as

Could not have said it better myself. Everything this guy said is vital. My friends wonder how I lay-off the close ones all the time. It’s because I shrink the strike zone to just the middle until I have two strikes on me. Like he said not all strikes are good pitches to hit. People think they should be able to take great pitches on the corners deep just because they get their pci on it. Mlb players may get hits on those pitches but they rarely take them deep. I play this game a lot and for the most part I think it plays pretty realistic.
