2022 Homerun Derby

So far we have Pete Alonso, Ronald Acuna Jr, Juan Soto, Kyle Schwarber, and Albert Pujols.
Assuming they go with the top HR hitters from the AL, it will be Aaron Judge, Mike Trout, and Yordan Alvarez.
Soto is only at 17 HRs, Acuna is at 8, and Pujols is at 6. It's possible that other HR leader turned it down, but I doubt it. Soto and Acuna are fan favorites and Soto had a great showing last year so I understand them a little bit more. Pujols has had a great career, but to give a spot to him that should go to Buxton, Rizzo, Riley, Seager, Walker or Betts is a crime. Pujols is also going to be taking an at bat from a young player that's having a breakout year. Pujols was great, but the All-Star game is supposed to celebrate this year's stars not the stars from 10 years ago.

The ASG went downhill when they allowed fans to dictate who gets in. Pujols being in this year as a “tip of the cap” move is understandable but still dumb.
As far as the HR Derby goes. It’s my understanding they reach out to all the top home run hitters in the league up to that date and they get the choice if they want to participate or not. A lot of guys choose not to especially if they’ve done it before. That’s where you get your guys like Acuna who get a spot. Unfortunately it’s not a perfect science especially when they give the players the option and most are opting out due to being scared of injury or messing their swing up for the 2nd half of the season.

I can see Trout and Judge opting out for those reasons, But Acuna instead of Riley and Pujols instead of a whole lot of players. What is, instead of what should be, is happening in the All-Star game. Do you remember when Mariano Rivera was named POTG in his last year. He deserved to be there, but he didn't even strike anyone out in his inning and Joe Nathan got the save. He was named it because of his career. I had to look this up, Chris Sale got the win with 2 IP and 2 SO with no hits. It was an eh game looking at the box score. Probably boring to watch. With that in mind, I think Zach Greinke should get the Cy Young this year...

Yeah it’s just a popularity contest to get in now. I don’t even watch the game anymore really unless there’s nothing else on tv. I’ll always tune into the HR derby though because it’s always awesome to see how far anyone can hit a baseball haha

I couldn't tell you who was even in the finals last year for the hrd. Or who won any of the last few years. It's kinda like the slam dunk contest in NBA. Just an exhibition that really doesn't have much to do with the sport. Hitters have to completely change the way they swing to compete in hrd, and sometimes it messes them up for the rest of the year

Don't think Alvarez will participate as he just went on the 10 day IL.

Are you even old enough to remember when that was not the case? Fan vote has determined the starters since 1970. Granted, in the old days the vast majority of the voting came from fans who actually went to the ballparks, where they handed out these ballots in the early innings and then collected them later in the game. (and yes, I am old enough to remember punching out all the cardinals on some of those cards as a kid)

Albert Pujols & Miguel Cabrera were add as legend players for their lifetime accomplshment. They were selected by the commissioner.
