If you have PS5 yes, because only HDMI 2.1 supports their enabled VRR (48hz-120hz) for "full effect" of 120hz and in 4k.

I do not have a series X, but I heard that it has freesync enabled, so games on that system can run at up to 120hz with HDMI 2.0 at up to 1440p.

If your monitor reads that you are at 120hz then you are at 120hz. Look at the video output while playing.

Ok, you should still be able to get up to 120hz at 1080p or 1440p. VRR is only available with HDMI 2.1 on the PS5, but it is not necessary for the higher refresh rate. Based on community feedback however, I am not even sure how much of this matters in the current state of the game.
