Question about vrr and 120hz

Sorry, I don't know about this stuff. My monitor says it's 1ms 144hz, so I'm assuming the 120 won't be a problem. I see in my ps5 setting it says VRR enable, but when I try to turn it on to automatic it says my TV doesn't support vrr. Is that because the ps5 doesn't support vrr yet? Or do I need a new monitor?

PS5 doesn’t support it yet. I think that’s the issue.

Your monitor will also need HDMI 2.1 support

The issue is that your display doesn't support VRR apparantly. What I would do is google your TV/monitor and see if it supports VRR or not. Because if it doesn't, once the VRR feature will go live you won't be able to use it if your display doesn't support it.

You need a monitor/tv with HDMI 2.1.... Sony's console update for VRR is coming sometime this week, according to their website.

For the people saying you need a HDMI 2.1 port, I could be wrong but I don't think that's accurate. If you want to play games at 4K@120hz, then you need HDMI 2.1. But there are monitors without HDMI 2.1 that support both 120hz and VRR. You just won't be able to play at 4K while running those settings, which you CAN do with HDMI 2.1

You can get the benefit of a higher refresh rate with HDMI 2.0, but not VRR or ALLM.

You are correct. 4k @ 120fps will need HDMI 2.1. I am playing on my 1440p 144hz monitor right now @ 1080P and 120 FPS on HDMI 2.0

And VRR is only important when your framerate dips. It keeps it smooth and free of tears. If you are using HDMI 2.0 you are using 1080P resolution and you will do a constant 120 fps with no problem, so VRR isnt needed as you will be using a fixed locked 120 fps.

Lol, yes you will be able to do the 120 fps @ 1080P is the short answer.
Because God knows Sony isnt gonna give us 1440p on the PS5 ever probably.

The main benefit with VRR is that it syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphic output. So if the game and monitor is using 120hz, you could have screen tearing and stutter without VRR. This is why freesync and 120hz can be excellent for fast paced games, like this one.

It’s really confusing for me too. I’m sure my current TV is junk for gaming (Vizio M55-D0) and I have the money to buy a much better one but trying to figure out the good options are then making sure I have the optimal settings starts to give me a headache.

If you say get a Gigabyte M32U that has it all, it will costs you about what 4 Trouts are worth in real money LOL

Simply put, you should consider buying a display with HDMI 2.1.
