So I've been playing offline since release, grinding all the programs and what not. So during that time I always keep my opinion to myself, because we all know offline usually plays fine and you don't really run into the issues that could spoil your experience.
Today I've been playing the event all day long. And it started out okay I guess, some slugfests here and there and just getting my feet wet. Nothing out of the ordinary. But the more I played, the more recurring themes I encountered.
First and foremost, the amount of bloopies/flukies or whatever you wanna call them are simply ridiculous. I understand that it is a part of baseball and it is totally fine if they happen occasionally. But the volume of bad swings that get rewarded are just out of hand at this point. We all like hit variety and we all want contact hitters to be usable, but not if this is the trade off. And that's what I feel is happening here, these hits are a thing because of the complaints regarding lack of hit variety in the past in my opinion.
What I also noticed is that the game, once again, forces my perfectly executed pitches into the strike zone. This was a thing in 18 and it feels the exact same to me in that sense. I have given up staggering amounts of homeruns on offspeed pitches that I spotted almost in the dirt and executed perfectly, yet somehow ended up in the bottom of the strike zone. Why are perfectly executed pitches being punished? What's the point of mastering PPP, which was introduced to widen the skill gap mind you, if you're gonna reduce that skill gap once more by adding randomness to the pitching outcome?
Then I've noticed that contact hitting is broken. Again. Try it for yourself to have a laugh. I played 5 games in a row swinging with the contact button exclusively and I hit 430ft homeruns and got 110+ mph exit velocities all the same. We can no longer see our opponent's feedback, but I wouldn't be surprised if many of the players in this community do the exact same thing. Since it widens the timing windows, allows for more solid contact and still gives you the same exit velocities.. why would you ever normal swing or even power swing?
Then there is the overall performance of the game in terms of fluidity and choppiness. I play on PS5 on performance mode and I played in a handful of created stadiums and major league parks that once again induce frame drops and choppiness all around. As if I'm playing on my vanilla PS4 all over again. Try playing an online game at Target Field and you'll see what I mean.
Another thing that seriously irritated me is the amount of weak flyballs and even pop ups on swings where the ball is entirely in my buckshot, albeit in the top part of it. But that's what the game wants us to do, no? Lift the ball with power hitters? So that's what I'm aiming for and I get okay hits for weak pop ups. Again, this reminded me of MLBTS 18.
Last but not least (for now) is the amount of freeze offs STILL HAPPENING. Like how on earth can you not find the issues to this problem for all these years? I can't help but think that these people just don't care or have given up on this problem like "it's part of the game, get used to it". That's unacceptable and laughable in a sense.
I have tried my hardest to find some good things to say as well. I guess I do like the sound off the bat, especially during a perfect/perfect. I also like the fact that fielders have more urgency and you're able to gun a lot more people now with good throwing input. But that's about it.
I'm sorry, but the game is just not very good. Again. I hate that it gives me MLBTS 18 vibes, but that's really what it does. Hopefully the upcoming gameplay patch that has been confirmed will fix many of these issues. If not, I probably won't play very long.
Edit:
One thing I forgot to mention, the PCI anchor. This feature was brought because people wanted to be able to have a sensitivity slider for the PCI. This is not that! The feature is terrible because it is basically guess pitch lite. People can just sit in a certain part of the zone and take away a whole part of the plate. I noticed that some people do this and don't swing until the ball comes into that part of the zone. I don't see how this has anything to do with skill and I think it's a terrible feature that should be removed asap or should be barred from online play.I don’t believe you are playing the next Gen version if you are able to choose performance mode. I could be wrong since I’m on xbox, but on the xbox side you can only change the graphics settings on the old Gen version.
You can't do it in game, but in the PS5 settings menu. Why would anyone lie about this anyway?
Something is wrong with your brain if you take that comment as an attack accusing you of lying.
Read it to yourself again slowly and please point out any portion of that which would lead you to interpret that comment as a an accusation of lying.
You're either inferring he is lying or is confused (less likely). What other way is there really to take it?
I wouldn't bother with him, he's another one of those guys that can never admit fault with anything

You literally said "I don't believe you are playing the next gen version", while I made it really clear in my review that I am playing on PS5. Not sure how else you expected me to take it, but non offense taken either way.
I think I may have seen that you are from Germany or something…..could be a language barrier here.
That phrase does not have the literal meaning of I don’t believe. It’s kind of equivalent to maybe you are playing the last Gen version…..

To be fair, I think he said he’s Dutch. So likely a second language. English is my wife’s second language (respect!), but there is definitely nuance lost sometimes and we have to clarify our meanings. I don’t think that’s to blame here, though. There has been a proneness to reacting at a personal level on display.

I posted the response for you…..please show me where I am inferring he is lying or confused? I literally said I could be wrong since I’m on Xbox.
Apparently you aren't aware of how your words come across. It's a fair takeaway.
Which words? Please elaborate haha. If that comment was offensive to you or anyone else I don’t know what to say.
Edit…read this comment first and scrolled up after.
Probably language barrier here.

I had a Dutch massage therapist once. Funny guy. He once told me about the acronym for Consciously UnMarried mothers back home.

This game reminds me exactly of 18. It comes to a point in events where I don’t know what I am supposed to do hitting wise because nothing makes sense. Good contact in the pci lazy pop ups and little choppers. To me it feels like pitcher confidence and/or energy may be factored in way too much with the result.
Yup, another good point. It's hard to get hitters out too. Just like in 18.
AI foul balls in this game are ridiculous. I'll be playing a game of conquest, bring in my diamond closer, to face the bottom of a teams order with guys that are bronze at best, and they'll have 10 pitch at bats. No matter what I throw and where I place it.
Also ..hitting. I notice a theme this year, unlike previous seasons. In extra innings, if my first hitter doesn't get the runner home, and just advances him to third on a sacrifice, i'll go down 1-2-3 every time. It's like clockwork. Move the runner to 3rd, less than two outs, no matter the hitter or his ratings...weak ground balls to the corner infielders everytime, holding the runner at third. With good or perfect contact. Every. Single. Time. -

Every. Single. It's a huge problem because it keeps at bats going forever, until you hang a pitch that's crushed. That happened in 18 as well, hence the constant reference to it.

I like the comparison to 18.
17 was a big leap and one of the best MLBTS if not the best. 18 was a letdown on 17.
21 was also a big leap into next gen and with covid going on, they really did perform a miracle getting it out on 4 consoles and having it play pretty good from day 1 and no framerate issues on next gen. But 22 so far is not on the same level when it comes to quality and functionality as 21 was.
22 lacks the attention to detail that 21 had.

21/22Yeah I strongly feel like the game has regressed compared to last year as well. Which has been a recurring theme for this franchise too, instead of maintaining the good aspects and build on that moving forward, they always seem to try and fix things that didn't need any fixing and break key aspects of the game in the process. I'll never understand why they keep doing this.

I stopped reading after you mentioned the only online you’ve done is playing event games today.
Cause none of this stuff happens in any other gameplay? You really want to go that route?
I’m going the route of not bothering to read a wall of text titled “my annual assessment…” when it’s based on only handful of online games. Yes.
Not just a handful, a whole day of playing. I've been doing this assessment every year in the exact same fashion, and I have identified issues that were at some point in time generally accepted by the community as a whole each and every time. Sorry if I didn't meet your criteria.
Anytime.
Anytime? That's your response? Okay.
Breathe. You don’t need validation from everyone. It’s not personal. Everything you said may be true. I just don’t care to read it because I have the ability to think. You know, small sample sizes.

I enjoyed your review. I never played 18 but watched a lot of streams of it. I was glad I skipped that year. Haven’t hopped online this year yet but hitting feels very different so far. It’s either perfect/perfect or off-PCI flukes. No in between.
I’m worried how this game is going to play when we all have 100 contact/power at most positions.
The pitch drift was definitely a huge problem in 19 too.

Oh okay gotcha. But the Owl guy and the Bob guy with the WS icon are on the same page going against me. Owl made that commented directed towards me.
And yeah I agree with what you say.

18 comparison is looking good although it is early. Seeing a lot of good inputs go down the middle of the plate. Also it was super grindy to get a real good team (immortals). Lot of grind in this game for not a lot of reward so far.

Yeah true although I intentionally left out the grind aspect because to me it's not AS much of a dealbreaker as the gameplay is. But I would encourage anyone to keep playing and find out for themselves just how bad it really is in online gameplay. Because it is and I don't think anyone can deny that with a straight face.

Well heck yall( (Im southern) SDS is encouraging the cheese factory they call ranked seasons .Even got a bat skin for it this year. Ranked sells stubbs but the only thing rank about it is the stats that smell a little odd. I play it occasionally and nothing ever changes. As for on line rated, how is a guy batting .076 with an era of 7.00 won 300 games and lost 5 ? Never have gotten an explanation there. Check those leaderboards and do the math. It aint rocket science.Take 20 people to rack up all them wins vrs CPU in a month some got already. What in physical laws of nature am I missing?
